Hackers on your server

Postby Litz|SS » Sat Jun 26, 2004 7:13 am

Just wanted to drop by and let you know about some hackers that might play on your servers. I know they played there a while ago.

They got busted @ Penguincity.org's server:

They are everywhere(and more than just wallhacks). Once PB knows of a hack, it updates and looks for it. Until PB is aware of it, it will not be caught. This particular one will most likely be updated into PB within a day or two, if not already.

PB is the best there is to prevent cheating, but it will always be one step behind.

Yes but I doubt it's "their" hax. Anyways if you have md5 you could have a global guid ban put on them from all wulf servers couldn't they? End of problem. ;)

Can't there be a "hack-proof" way of making a game?

No.

If this was rhetorical, then no comment.

Bjoern Christoph from evenbalance research team says:

You have cheats which work as external programs like aimbots, and then there are wallhacks which usually work as OpenGL pass-through drivers. All of these cheats are detectable by PunkBuster right away: once we have the cheat it's detectable in a few minutes on all PB Servers with an Internet connection to our master server, from which new cheat detections are spread out. This is our main deterrent against cheating: A new cheat can be detected any time, a cheater will always have to fear his detection. I'm aware of roughly 15 such cheats for RtCW and all are detected right now. On the other hand you also have cheats which work based on scripts. These are not so easy to detect automatically with the current version of PunkBuster, we will improve this soon though. Our focus is getting the PB code as stable as possible with regard to the auto-update system and then to work on better detection algorithms. Right now we allow admins to use cvars to check for some settings which may be seen as "cheating" or "gaining an advantage over others" by some admins just as others may not see it that way: I'm not really going to go into this as this has been discussed very often already, the pw.com forum is quite full of these posts :) We also give admins the ability to manually check for scripts and binds manually and see if the scripts a player is using may allow for cheating. We are aware that this is something admins may not like to do and would rather like everything automated, but as I said above, the main focus is getting PB stable, then we improve our features and also detection of cheat scripts and such things.

Cheating is really not as bad as in CS though, and we try our best so that RtCW will never become something like "Cheater-Strike", which is what some of my friends who still love CS call it (new updates and "secure" CS servers didn't really change much they say, but I don't personally don't know because I don't play CS anymore as I already said).

You don't see many cheaters anymore, at least I haven't. VAC (Valve's Anti-Cheat) has done a good job, better than PB could have done.

but! here is some ways around this if pb isnt configured right

http://users.pandora.be/z/suggested/bobupminus1.jpg
is a screenshot illustrating this (cg_bobup -1 used).

http://users.pandora.be/z/suggested/fovfdoor.jpg
Using a fov lower then 90 would also be some cheat (zooming in), but this is not possible anymore.

When using
r_stencilbits 8
cg_shadows 2
or (i don't think this matters):
cg_shadows 4
You have some sort of wallhack. You see people coming through walls sometimes. cg_shadows 4 will make your wolf crash more often.

PB for wolf has a long way to go, in fact a petition just went around and was sent to PB and they replied that they would do some more work on Wolf to secure Wallhacks and such.

Can anyone just take a screenshot of someone else's game like that or does it have to be someone who is enabled by the server ie admins? If anyone can, may I have the command to do so.

Also is it possible for a cheat to block someone capturing them and instead show a normal display?

When you spec someone hacking you will just see what it would be like if they werent hacking, unless you ahve the same stuff. So when you spec someone you can't really tell iuf they are hacking, you just have to see how they play when you spec them. For instance if you see them stand next to a solid wall and then pop out shooting before you can see the guy, they probally are up to something.

It's easy to block the screenshot capture, just look at HL. When PB was around, all the cheaters did it, and still do with current anti-cheats. That's why screenshots will never be effective.
