A million bucks is not a lot of money. The best thing to do is get into investments that are fairly safe with solid returns. One such used to be mutual funds.

If you have a million bucks after taxes sitting there, get into something kicking back about 10% a year, this will give you $100,000 before taxes to live off of per year. Any job you have, from $20k McDonalds manager and up will just be bonus money to spend(though I suggest continuing your career if you already had one).

Cant take credit for that Col., that is how Tug Mcgraw responded to reporters when they asked him what he was goin to do with the multi-million dollar contract he recieved from the Phillies.

Mmmmm K, Guess I'm not the only one that thinks of Office Space when I hear that question. But yeah I'd do nothing maybe buy some property all over the world and travel. I hear Kyoto is nice this time of year. Other then that maybe open up my own little restauraunt or cafe.

Look for an established developer and team up on a tasty looking project, 1mil these days dont go far, not enough to retire on, if you want/have a family, and your say 35-40?

A million dollers doesn't make you rich nowdays a more interesting question "would be what would you were the only winner in a mega jackpot lottery? (like the one in the news last week)

If I won a mega jackpot I would, After taxes, give about half to close relatives then I would move to Florida (or another warm state that doesn't collect state income tax) and buy a large house on a large lake. I would have a completely wired house as well as a large computer "lab" where I would poke around with linux and programming but without a doubt there would be a lot of gaming too. Of course I would have a T1 at least and bleeding edge hardware. I guess the biggest differences in my life would be that I would travel more and I would spend a significant amount of time researching charitable projects that peek my interest... perhaps I would hire a group of programmers to develop open source projects I deem worthy and personally beneficial? I imagine another major change would be that , as a mega-millioniare significant numbers of women would suddenly consider me attractive. Finding a date would be much easier.

Buy a house for myself and one for my mother. Then I would put most of what is left into higher interest CD accounts. THen I would build a quad opteron PC rig with 16GB of ram and a dual X800 platnium video card with a dual moniter setup, then I would have a T3 line dug to my house.

True. It's not enough to retire on. However, if you're 35-40 and your current income is in the $80K-$100K range, you've acquired about half of your earning potential. So, if you can pay off all debts (and not accrue more), and invest the other half, you could easily cut your retirement age in half. By investing 20-50% of your income (no house/car/credit card payments), you could cut it down a few more years... *IF* your satisfied with your current lifestyle...
