It's hard though to quote men from roughly 240 years ago. I mean nuclear weapons didn't exist. We all know religious fanatics were alive and well.
But if I understand correctly Franklin was stating that sacrificing some civil liberties for protection was wrong?

1933 proved him correct.
January 30, 1933
Weimar Republic President Paul von Hindenburg appoints Adolph Hitler Chancellor.
February 27, 1933
The German Parliament (Reichstag) burns down. A dazed Dutch Communist named Marinus van der Lubbe is found at the scene and charged with arson. [He is later found guilty and executed].
February 28, 1933
President Hindenburg and Chancellor Hitler invoke Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, which permits the suspension of civil liberties in time of national emergency. This Decree of the Reich President for the Protection of the People and State abrogates the following constitutional protections:
Free expression of opinion
Freedom of the press
Right of assembly and association
Right to privacy of postal and electronic communications
Protection against unlawful searches and seizures
Individual property rights
States' right of self-government
A supplemental decree creates the SA (Storm Troops) and SS (Special Security) Federal police agencies

Not just that it was wrong but that it would lead to greater and greater evils in the future.
Here's another quote from my "sigs"
..."The price of freedom is eternal vigilance."
Thomas Jefferson

Just saw Murg's post and I couldn't come up with a better example.

Wow!
Let's just highlight a couple of Murg's post there for comparison.
We've abrogated this one with the swell sounding name of The Patriot Act!
See story that started this thread
We've been hammering away at this one since Roe v Wade
TSA and the DHS fit right here. And the Patriot Act allows for dandy warrants that don't have to pass standards of sufficient proof before being issued. Hell we should just pre-print 'em!
Don't go overboard on this one. I am NOT comparing the TSA and DHS to the atrocities commited by the SS. But hopefully you'll get the analogy.
I mean WTF was that? 19 foreign Nationalists commit an act of war and terrorism on our country and our response is to create police agencies that harass and intimidate our own citizens, steal from them, and make our basic freedom of going where we will, when we will it an uncormfortable and time consuming process.
