Watercooling

Postby MMmmGood » Sat Jul 17, 2004 6:09 pm

Ever since I moved into a three story home and put my PC on the top floor, its gotten as hot as 65C during the day time when its hottest out. I didnt like the idea of it getting that hot and couldnt think of anything to do to cool it.

I recently saw a watercooled system in the datacenter and thought it was an option since they have advanced a lot since I last looked at them over 2 years ago. The model I looked at got really great reviews on a lot of hardware sites and people said it was really easy to install.

Here are some pictures I just took of it fully installed:

This is a shot of the waterblock fully installed

This is a shot of the tubes coming out of the back of the PC. It comes with a builtin PCI card that feeds it out as well as regulates power and fan speeds

This is a shot of the PCI card. It has jumpers that hook into your Power switch jumper so when you power on your PC the unit goes on too. It also has fan jumpers if you want it to regulate the speeds of your case fans.

This is a shot of the back of the unit and the 'quick disconnect' valves on the rear. You can press down the button and pop out the tubes very easily and with no leakage if you need to move your computer.

This is a shot of the reservior on the top so you can check the fluid levels as well as re-fill the unit. It has two pumps so in case one fails your CPU wont fry.

This is a shot of the front of the unit where you can see the thermometer as well as the radiator on the top. It is near silent when running a the lowest speed, which is more than enough to keep the unit cool.

I've been VERY satisfied with this overall. My CPU at full load ( P4 3.2ghz 800FSB ) has gotten as low as 22C at night!!

During the day at full load it usually hovers around 35-37C.

All together it cost me $200 for the unit and $50 for the CPU block. It took about 90 minutes to install, but if I had to do it again I could do it in 45. The installation process was VERY easy and well documented, and they gave me every single thing I could need to install it except a screwdriver.

If you have $250 to blow and want a silent PC ( i barely hear my case fans now, thats it ) I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

I might also note that they sell waterblocks for your northbridge, GPU, and hard drive coolers. You can daisy-chain all the devices off of the 1 master unit on the top.

yeah I been thinking of getting with the times and going watercool too, I have 5 fans going in my case, and even though I have a rheobus to regulate all them fans, it is still audible..., idles at 30c and fully loaded it's at 45-47 celcius.

Ambient room temperature is 20c.

When I have some savings left, (in process of upgrading CPU and sound card, maybe speakers after), definitely going to look into watercooling after.

Looks good, you going to overclock? Isn't that the reason to get watercooling?

You use the link to the pic at a site rather than use the upload function of the webpage itself.

Did anyone see the Forum that was going around about the guy who caulked his pc watertight and then filled it with water? He was pissed on the forum that I read. I don’t know if it was a joke or not, but you would have to think it was. LOL
