Bad RAM slot?

Postby LordShard » Sun Jul 18, 2004 9:12 pm

Hey guys, while playing planetside last night, and a couple night before I noticed some serious system instability, the computer would crash and then lockup at the RAM test on the boot up, did this everytime. I reseated both ram modules and viola! It worked! My computer didn't crash anymore until playing planetside again earlier today. Well it locked up at the RAM test 2nd go through (motherboard tests RAM 3 times). But reseating had no effect.
At this point, I'm thinking, it must be something else wrong, not just the chip creaping away from slot.
I try both ram modules (by themselves) in the slot closest to the CPU, system will not even get video running or will crash during RAM check.
I try both RAM modules seperatly in slot 3 (I think furthest away from CPU) It worked! No problem booting up, detected both sticks at 512!
I retry slot 1 & slot 3 at the same time, it crashes.
I try slot 2 & slot 3 (the middle and far away slots) and it works! Boots up as normal.

So I'm still running with 1GB of ram, but I'm concerned if slot 1 is dead that if other go out I might be without a computer or be forced to run at 512MB.

I don't know if it is covered by warranty, I can't even find my warranty papers. :(

Is there a way I could fix this on my own? Something I could goto a local computer shop to fix it? I don't think the MB warranty is still in effect since it has been nearly a year since I've had it.

I didn't have anything overclocked, only at stock rates, no signs of burning or overheating damage, no funny smell so what could have caused this? o_O

Head to http://www.memtest86.com/ and download the ISO of the tester. Burn it to a CD and boot off of it and see if your RAM is bad.

Could be dead RAM slot, would probably have to get the RMA.

Try going back to the store you bought it from, see if they have you on file, ask them to print up the receipt again and then apply for RMA from manufacturer's website.

Tried that before, ram was good.

I have 2 ram slots. My first, closest to the cpu, is fubar. No idea why. Tried to upgrade one day from 380 or whatever it was to 2 512's and *poof* Suddenly no combination would work in #1. Now I limp along with 512, which was better than what I had b4... :(

Keek.

@Keek
Bah, planetside wouldn't be playable from what I've heard with only 512, need at least a gig.

@Agent-Commando
I e-mailed the place I bought my mobo from and asked them to send me a copy of my recept.

Keek, sounds like you might have ESD'd (Electro-Static Discharge) you ram slot during the install, which could've killed it.

LordShard, if it's been less than a year, it's definately under warranty (I don't know of any mobo maker who doesn't have a 1 yr. warr). At worst, if you can't get a receipt, you can TRY to email their tech support people and see if maybe they'll repair it based on the s/n and date of manufacter (not likely, but it is possible). Worst case, you pay for the repairs or get a new mobo (and save the receipt you smacker :P ). I fried one of my Soyo boards twice(!) trying to put on a monster of a heatsink, so it was definately my fault, and it still only cost me $35 to get it fixed (their flat fee for non warr. repairs), and in both cases I got a brand new mobo outta it.

It does def. sound like a dead mem slot, which may or may not get worse. good luck

I got a copy of my receipt :D
Great support from the place I bought it from :DDDD
http://www.allstarmicro.com

I figured they would just send you a brand new board instead of wasting the money to repair it, prolly just recycle the old one.

Which reminds me, I need to get a new heatsink/fan combo for my CPU because it's so fricken noisy and vibrates so much. o_o
