Problem with my Radeon 9800 pro

Those are odd artifacts...I honestly haven't seen anything like that before on my 9700np (knock on wood :roll:

).

But thanks bullhead for telling us the bad news about 4.7 drivers. I was too lazy to update to 4.7 so I never did...

I'll try downloading the tweak and downclocking the card. Will post results when done...

Agent, I'm not blaming ATI, but the point is that this shouldn't happen. I have an incredible PC. All other video cards work perfectly. ...But for some reason this one decided to completely screw up my machine.

Tell me- do those white dots appear right away, or does it take a few minutes for them to appear?

download rage3d tweak and lower the clocks for the core/ram. if the artifacts disappear, it means your clocks were running the card too hot, meaning you should RMA it.

Also, there is a chance you'd score yourself a 9800XT once the RMA goes through. A lot of people have received XT's instead of pro's

I underclocked the card and it didn't work. The distortions were still there. These appear instantly, it doesn't take a couple minute for them to appear.

I'm wondering.. this card should have the following clocks: Core: 380MHz Momery: 680MHz

In Rage 3D tweak I show the default clocks set to: Core: 378MHz Memory: 337MHz

Memory clock seems a bit low doesn't it?

I'm starting to think I got a bad card...

Try going Start, Run. Then type Slayer sup if ur der, and kid if ur der. That fix's everything!

The 378/338 numbers you have found for the ATI default are correct. Try Dowloading the ATItool. It will auto process and determine the maximum speeds that you can clock to without any artifacts. I would also consider checking the fan and heatsink on the card to make sure that they are clean and turning at what appears to be a normal rate.

Overclocking doesn't help either. So who thinks I have a bad card?

Slayer, your problem is likely the same as mine. That you have a bad card. Let ATI know and they should send you a new one, as they did me... it will arrive in ten days time.

Have you messed with the voltage(excess heat) or the AGP bus. I understand ATI cards don't like to have their bus speeds increased. Otherwise Comp USA $199.99:D

well...you formatted your disk, tried various driver versions, downclocked the card, and the same exact artifacting appears in two different games.

I'd say something is wrong with it. Maybe you should RMA

I have the 9800 pro and haven't noticed any problems yet...I'm wondering what RMA is though?

I think Newegg is good about RMAs. That card had over 400 people rate it on the Newegg site and it had 5/5 stars. Maybe you got a defective one.

and sewer-urchin, an RMA is a 'return merchandise authorization' where you send the card back to the company you purchased one from and they send you a brand spankin new one.
