Lil' computer help... norton

Postby King » Mon Aug 09, 2004 6:54 pm

Ok, so im a big dope, right.... and i f my computer up royally using that 99 tips to help XP that was in a thread a few months ago.

My dumbass does a reinstall w/o going and removing the Norton using the add/remove programs in the control panel.

Now when i try to reinstall my Internet Security it can't install the program cuz technically half the stuff is still on my comp from before the reinstall.... follow?

Does anyone know how to get rid of the old stuff so i can reinstall it so i actually have the security that i paid for? I have already emailed the tech help and im waiting for a response but habib in india hasn't responded yet. F-ing outsourcing.

If anyone could help, i'd be greatly appreciative. If not just flame away since im f-ing retarded and a complete computer novice.:freak:

Ehh, that really sucks man. You might try using a Registry cleaner to get rid of old registry enteries that are broken, useless, etc. and maybe that would clean out you old Norton Installation Registry Entries that are preventing you from re-installing. Norton is known for this kind of thing.

Honestly your best best is to start doing this the right way now. It will make your computing life much less harder in the future.

1. Start by keeping your important files such as music, pron and documents and such on a separate hard drive or at least a separate partition. A separate HD is best but irrelevant if you back up the data once a month or as needed.

2. this accomplishes two things.
a. The files will be centrally located for easy backup to your preferred media.
b. It will leave the C: drive for Your operating system and installed applications. They'll breathe better and the C: drive can be wiped and reinstalled without disturbing what's important to you.

3. Once the data is safe on the other drive or partition (and backed UP!) you will then need to reformat and reinstall your OS from scratch on the C: drive.

4. Then once the OS is settled and installed you will need to install:
a. your chipset drivers
b. video card drivers
c. Any XP patches and service packs including direct X.
d. any remaining drivers for hardware.

Now you can tweak the OS as you like. For instance disabling the messenger service, disabling automatic updates and other things you prefer to modify. You can also apply your bookmarks (cause they were backed up right?), apps and games along with patches. Tweak your game configs and make a few dry runs.

Double check everything, and then burn an image of the C: drive to the D: drive with your app of choice: Norton Ghost or Drive Image.

Now if the C: drive or the OS fails, a reinstall is a mere 10 minutes away. It's a task to get it done but it's well worth it in the long run.

If the registry cleaner fails, then yes, reformat.
