DSL or Cable?
I'm at a cross roads, i have access to both cable and DSL in my area... I currently have the 3 meg down from cable... but only like 256k upload.
I've heard that DSL has better upload when you get the 3 meg service from them. IE: SBC YAHOO. Will upload affect the gameplay at all on any multiplayer server? Can a higher upload rate affect lag at all?
so what do you all reccomend? especially coming from the guys who run the server...
Yes true noob questions but a jedi's gotta do what a jedi's gotta do.
Thanks for the help.

I have the same question. This is what I know so far.
[I do not mean to be redundant. I am sure that this basic info is all over the web along with all the opinions. I am also needing anyones else knowledge or help with this too please.]
I understand that cable or DSL are about the same it just depends on the upload. They are both sending and receiving"digital packets" of information.
Cable has better shielding and less line loss. We used to use it in networks because of that.
DSL in some areas has some line loss depending of your distance from telephone switching point but in this part of the country it seems to be less of a problem and more realible [ less down time ] .
Plus while I use cat5 lines in my house - I have cat3 lines up to the connection point from the phone co.
It seems that cable modems do need to reset sometimes quite a bit at least out here. I am going to try to change to cable & see.
Time to google again.
Screw it. I'll just get a T1.

i've been trying to curtail my lag problems. Everyone says i should have a ping of 40 or so but its generally around 85-100 sometimes more. Really bad when the beach server is full.
I've done tests to see how good my connection is and it says its generally at its full capacity so i have no idea what the hell is goin on. I've called the cable company talked to one of their techs, says there are no prob's from their end. My computer is workin' the best it has in a long time so i dont know what the deal is.

Cable is generally faster then a DSL line. DSL performance is very dependent on the distance from your house to the telco swithing equipment. If the run approaches a mile, forget it. With DSL, there is no latency across the DOCXIS interface.
That being said, cable will generally have nuch higher bandwith allowances (here I have 10m down, 1m up, and have actually gotten 7mb/s dls).
I would go with cable, and unless their is a performance or reliability problem, forget DSL.
