Downloading MP3s

Postby Fingerbang » Thu Aug 19, 2004 1:30 am

Hey guys, I recently deleted my Kazaa Lite K++, and reinstalled windows. Does anyone know of a site where I can download a peer to peer network that is decent, and does not have as much of a threat of viruses?

In general the government has succeeded in killing the sharing of mp3's.

I use winmx for mp3s. I've never got a virus from them. As for virus's you're better off getting Norton or some other anti-virus software. Sharazza and Ares are some other shareware programs.

http://www.bluetack.co.uk/

Protowall- integrates with Kazaa Lite and others if I recall.

Or, use Outpost Firewall (the best IMO) with the Blockpost plugin. It's not for beginners however. Zone Alarm is not a good fw for pirating.....errr, I mean filesharing.

Tauscan is a good trojan scanner as well.

You really can't rely on anti-virus alone to protect your PC from malicious code. Viruses aren't the only problem with P2P filesharing. In fact it's probably the least of worries compared to other issues.

The RIAA and MPAA are pretty clever and nasty, so be careful.

If you insist on P2P mp3 filesharing, then the best suggestion would be to have a dedicated PC for that purpose using the aforementioned solutions. Then if you trash the OS because of a virus, trojan etc., it's not a big deal if you have it backed up as it can be easily restored. Use a separate partition or hdd for storing the files after they are deemed to be clean.

Bottom line: the only true way to eliminate getting viruses using P2P is to not do it. Aside from that, locking down your pc and using detection and other tools is the only way to avoid trashing your OS (or worse).

Good luck, you'll need it.

You might want to try the legal way too - http://www.real.com. Songs are only $.49 each, if you can deal with Realplayer.

lol, why do that when you can get music for free? ^

I would never pay 49 cents for a download. lmao

And all you have to do is scan your files before openning them with anti-virus software. It's always safe to have a firewall up:) Norton comes with one and Zone is free....

And I seriously never gotten any virus's from downloading music....atleast from WINMX and I've been using that program for 3 years.

Just remember.. Using a peer to peer network, evenryone can get your ip. With your ip, its easy to find you and you have a good chance of getting a nice legal action letter from the RIAA.

Your exactly right. The RIAA has put some bad music files into the Kazaa network. If you download a song that seems corrupted then they have you IP. It is just a matter of time before they come a knocking on your door.

Is it true that you only get legal action if they catch people "uploading" songs off you?

In other words, Jeffro, clicking "disable file sharing" and just downloading files is illegal. ;)
