Something I Do For School

Postby Evan » Tue Aug 24, 2004 12:56 am

I'm bored, so I decided to post on what I do for my school everyday, all day after school...

Example of what I do for my school's tech program:

Image

This was for the last school choir concert in the spring. This particular design was used for the soloists that performed, and a more generic design was used for the rest of the show.

Everything you see there is done in about 1 to 2 days of work (3 - 5 hours a day after school). We have over 90 lights to focus, add color gels (theater term on what you use to change light colors), wiring, and lighting board programming.

Here is what we use to program and control our lights:

Image

We have 48 channels (circuits) for lights. 40 of those channels are 20 Amp, 2.4 Kilowatt circuits, and the other 8 are 10 Amp, 1.2 Kilowatt circuits.

Our lights are never less than 500 Watts a piece. A few of our lights are 1000 Watts.

We run 2 DMX cables (those of you who are into music, or if you've ever been a DJ may know what a DMX cable is. Think XLR cable, but for lights) from our lighting board to our control Dimmers. We have 5 dimmers that are daisy-chained since we only need to run 2 cables to get the control we need.

Any high school that gets a budget for it's arts programs will have a nice looking auditorium like that. You're lucky. As for catwalks good on you guys- the electric lifts are the ONLY way to fly.
