My HS didn't invest much in the arts. In fact, I think during my entire tour, we only ever had 1 play.

We have a major play every year. Before and after that are smaller shows, concerts, etc.

Considering that I can't control the lights with my PC (I don't have the software or hardware that costs a few thousand dollars), I only use it to design lighting schemes.

We do use a 17" Dell flatscreen for the controlling of the board. The board shows the status of all lights, macros, cues, etc. on the monitor.

The cool part about the board we use (ETC Expression 24/48) is that you can reprogram and control lights on the fly. Like for example, if there's not enough light on one section of the stage we can program lights to cover that area by changing their power or (in the case of moving lights), focusing them on a different part of the stage. We always overlap lights so that if one goes out or isnt enough to cover an area, we have more lights to use.

The board itself has 2 modes that are used all the time - Stage and Blind.

With Stage mode enabled, whatever changes you make on the board are instantly changed on the stage in real time. We used this 90% of the time.

Blind mode is used for when you need to reprogram lights without changing something that's currently being used. I can easily change cues, power, etc. without affecting the current settings. This really allows me to have mistakes fixed as the show is going on.

Another handy feature on the board is the dreaded 'Black Out button'. With a single button press, I can instantly turn off all lights if I ever need to end some part of the scene quickly. Pressing it again will turn the lights back on instantly at full power. Only problem is that this button is in the center of the board, so accidents DO happen. This is a reason why we disable this feature until we need it.

Another cool thing that I can do with the board, is make 'soft patches' to the Dimmers to change light channels. Currently, the way we have it setup is that channels 1 through 40 are DMX channels 1 to 40 and channels 41 to 48 are DMX channels 513 to 520. We use 2 x 512DMX cables (up to 512 channels per cable). The reason channels 41 to 48 start on 513 is because they are on the second DMX cable (and when you add this second cable, the other dimmers and the board see it as channels 513 to 1024). If I ever needed to, I can use the board to change all these channel settings.

For example, I can make channel One and Two on the Dimmer become channel 10 on the board. Basically, it's combining these to channels to create one. I can also switch channel One to be channel Two on the board, and vice versa.

The difference between this 'soft patching' and actual Dimmer patching is that the board channels are the only things that are changed if you use a soft patch. You can reset the board to use the default Dimmer patches by going into Options and selecting 'Reset board configuration'. Hard patching is when we actually go to the Dimmers and program them to read the channels as something different. This is a lot harder to do, and not something I'd ever need to do.

Here's another scheme I used for the same choir concert. It is a little dark since the lights aren't on at full power, but that was the general scheme.

You can also see a few lights that are setup, and the auditorium itself. It may look small, but it holds about 514 people with enough leg room for everyone. Problem is, there is no air conditioning in the auditorium yet, so with all the lights on in the summer - things get a bit hot.

My High School

It was the nation's first million dollar high school and I think Dean Smith graduated from it.

It's an old and beautiful building but does show it's age a bit on the inside. Just got airconditioning 3 years ago i think.
