Doom3 impressions
I haven't had much time to play the last few weeks, I just put in an hour or so last night playing Doom3, I'm pretty dissapointed. Maybe it was just overhyped, but they really ranted and raved about how good the ai is, but it seems like Doom2 with better graphics to me...open a door, monster runs right at you, shoot monster, move on...
I don't know what I expected ai wise, but with all that hype I guess I expected the monsters to be so smart that they would jump out and beat my ass at chess or something.
Does the gameplay change much after an hour of so or am I wasting my time here?

Nope. You've seen the full spectrum. Open door, kill monster, move into the room until you trigger the 'hidden' door and kill the monster that is behind it, move on. I had not read much about D3 when I got it, but I am hugely disappointed. The storyline is mostly predictable, the gameplay is repetitive, even the voice acting is mediocre. It's sort of like someone said about Star Wars Episodes 1 & 2: Very pretty and shiny with lots of hi-tech SFX, but there's no soul to it. It's more like what I'd expect for my Xbox, not a high profile PC game from the makers of the best original FPS.

for a single player game I enjoyed it. It was better than far cry. I actually like the MP too, its just really buggy. Im waiting for a patch.
You have to play this game with headphones, an imagination, and an open mind. If you go into it with the mindset "nothing can scare me" or "this stuff is scripted", then you arent going to enjoy it. Over all, I think people were expecting too much from doom 3. Id delivered exactly what they promised. Its a more in-depth remake of the original Doom with modern visuals and sound. It seems most professional reviewers are able to recognize that and are giving appropriate scores of 85% and above.

Actually, I played the entire game with headphones and the lights off...I wanted it to scare me. I remember when I first downloaded the original and it was terrifying at times. This tried to use gimmicks to scare you: bad lighing, the aforementioned 'hidden' doors and spawning Imps. Some of it works, but there is never any variation. I jumped a few times, but out of being startled, not a sense of true terror that a good suspense/horror movie can give you. If anyone doesn't think that a game can re-create the feeling of a scary movie, then I would suggest playing System Shock, and System Shock 2...it's a rare sequal that can out do it's original, but SS2 comes mighty close.

I though it was awesome for the first little while. Then it got very boring.
I've had it for a while, and I'm only on Alpha level 4. I haven't played it in the last 5 or 6 days, and don't feel like popping it into the CD drive because it's so repetetive.

I was right!
This game turned into be a short-lived fad.
Long live Half-Life!

HL2's primary draw for me is the mod-ability (sp?) of it. The singleplayer will be good I think, but the mutliplayer is where the game engine will really shine. I hope there will be some difficulty to the scripted events...one of the biggest problems with D3 is it took no thought at all... no puzzles to figure out, no challenge other than fast-twitch response.
