Anyone know Japanese? or know someone that does?

Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

You show a picture of a machine made stamp on it.

Doesn't mean that it's a fake, alot of the Japanese swords made before the war were machine-stamped.

I gave the link to all the pics to my japanese teacher. On tuesday when I go back I'll see what he says.

But a machine stamped sword is still machine made. To have anything worth money it has to be hand made. Not to mention the hand made swords from the feudal era and later are much stronger than any machine made swords.

There's nothing in the markings that suggest they're machine-made.

From my limited machine-shop experience the oval shallow with letters near the tip of the sword looks very machine-made. Actually mold-created. Way too uniform for hand-work. Plus the shallow area itself is (I'm a carver) very difficult to produce in soft materials. Easy to cut the shape, very hard to make the bottom of the shallow uniformly smooth.

The markings lower on the blade look like they are done with hammer and punch.

Would seem the sword was originally poured in a factory, then later on the engravings lower down were added to say something specific about the weilder. Ie, rank, outfit, etc.

Hand-punched unto the still-red-hot metal. Like a hot-wax seal. Doesn't have to be machine-made.

Even if machine-made, would have been forged, not molded.

So, could still be hand-made, but it's not gonna be a centuries-old blade.

Anyone knows why I can't take the handle off mine, even with the bamboo dowels removed?

Don't force it off, but isn't there something else that your supposed to remove before the hilt comes off?

There is no way that was made by a hand made stamp.

Mugzy, your sword is probably WWII-era, probably machine-made. The stamp on the tang should be an arsenal stamp, although I read they're usually quite smaller and stamped near the blade collar.

"NEVER CLEAN THE TANG OF A JAPANESE SWORD OR TAMPER WITH IT IN ANY WAY!!! - it will reduce its value by at least 50 percent!! The type and color of the rust is used to help date and to authenticate the blade."

My sword is exactly like the one at the top of this page:
