Star Wars - DVD Release

Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

Thats the whole point lordshard. They ARE putting out the special edition dvd's. NOT the original released versions.

And the added stuff just takes away from what the movie was. I liked the feel it had without that stuff. I guess if I grew up after they had come out, and the SE was the only version I saw, I would be none the wiser. But when you love a movie, and its such a huge movie like that, and they change it and don't make the original available, its just lame imo.

I was 7 years old when I saw Star Wars the first time on the big screen in 1977. It was my first real fairytale. I was never a star trek fan. To me it was always the fight between good and evil.

You're right, Heart Collector.. Special Edition blows. I still have my original on VHS and I'll probably stick with that with the mistakes, whatever they are, left in. It has a charm unlike anything george lucas does to fuck it up. I prefer to know people are mortal and can make mistakes which made half of the charm of the first movie. Skywalker yelling "Carrie!" when he first sees Leia after landing from blowing the death star, and of course.. the Han shoots first scene.

That is what made Solo badass. He shot before Greedo could even blink. Them changing that makes Solo a weaker character. A more wholesome character and not the true Rogue he should have been. Even the added Boba Fett scene in Jedi in Jabba's palace shouldn't have been added. He was more badass when we knew little about him. He was a mystery which added to his character's flare. Turning him into a major character in the sequels was a MISTAKE imho.

I think Lucas should have handed the story over to a true fan of the originals and let him direct. Even Kevin Smith would have done a better job.

As much as I love the holy trilogy, I think the whole series needs to just end at this point. No more books, comics, specials.. just end it. He took a fairy tale and turned it into a commercial empire which is exactly what he tried to avoid in the first place. Talk about hypocracy.

Yeah, they should have released an original version for us. They don't understand what it meant us, as it was, back in 1977. I don't care if the special effect don't compare to todays special effects. I saw a special Saturday night about the making of Star Wars and what a train wreck it was at first (Low budget, tech difficulties etc). At one point they showed John William and London Symphony Orchestra playing some of the themes. Just hearing the original music made my heart skip a beat, I kinda felt that magic for second, like it was 1977 all over again.

I agree that if an original version was released on DVD, I would take that over the "special edition" any day.

Where can you get a version of the original Star Wars on DVD? I thought that was never released on DVD...same for Empire and Return of the Jedi...were and when?

i have to agree with inmate and heart collector on this one. Why screw up a perfectly good movie. So what else do they have in the special edition, Luke listening to headphones while shooting down bad guys. (Iron Eagle)? I wish George Lucas a shitty life for destroying a movie that so many of us grew up watching. Here's to you Mr. Lucas................F'ker

AP: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?

Lucas: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

AP: Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?

Lucas: Not really. The movies are what the movies are. ... The thing about science-fiction fans and "Star Wars" fans is they're very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I'm making the movies, so I should have it my way.

Ladies, let's keep it civil.

I saw the new A New Hope yesterday, Greedo misses? What the hell, but they tried making it look like both fired at the same time, but Greedo had the head start. You're all right, they should have just let Han shoot first. Blah!

I agree with Lucas, except I don't believe the Greedo shot is what he wanted it to be. I just think he bowed to pressure to make it PC.
