New Speakers - Opinions

Postby CodeRed68 » Fri Sep 10, 2004 9:01 am

Hey all,
I want to get a new pair of speakers for my computer. I need a kick ass set, with a subwoofer, because I play most if not all my music through my computer.
The problem is, I don't want to spend a whole lot of money right now. Maybe 200-300 bucks MAX. But hopefully cheaper.

Right now I am using an Altec Lansing pair w/ subwoofer that cost around 90-100 bucks but they just don't cut it. Getting some distortion when they emit too much mid range or bass.

I am open to all suggestions. It seems like you guys here know more about this stuff and what's good.
Thanks !!

I have these and have been very happy with the sound quality.

Good luck!

Swans. They are sold exclusively at newegg.com now. The are the multimedia speaker line of Swan(multimedia). Swan(loudspeakers) is sold exclusively over the internet at http://www.theaudioinsider.com. If you go to their review section you will see reviews of their speakers, including their multimedia lines.

Sadly, I went to newegg.com to see which ones they have, and they only have 2 different sets available. I find this odd since Swan had at least 4 different sets just a few months ago.

If this is your music system, these are the speakers to get. These are NOT made by some large electronics company who mass produces the crap you buy at best buy. This is a audiophile company producing high end speakers. I woudl personally get the M200. Yes, there is no sub, but their sound quality is much better than the T-120.

Hop one ebay and find a set of the Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1. These are some of the best pc speakers made.

Don't bother with the new Klipsch, they are not near as good.

Thanks for the tips, guys.
TommyBoy & JimmyTango, does the M200 & Logitech speakers have computer hook ups? or is this for a standard stereo/reciever?

All you need to do is go to Radioshack and pick up a stereo(headphone plug) to dual RCA adapter. The M200's are powered, there is no need for a receiver, only a signal source.

The best thing you can do is by actual speakers. Multimedia speakers just do not stack up against loudspeakers. Do you have a receiver hanging around not being used? If so I would look at Axiom Audio, http://www.axiomaudio.com Their bookshelf speakers are down right cheap, the M2i and M3ti both fall under your $300 max spending. I would reccomend the Swan 2.1 BC at $299 plus shipping, but they are backordered. Axiom's are in stock. If you are patient, you can get on their b-stock list and save even more money. Also, Axiom's prices include shipping to you.

If you really really want good sound for music, expand that budget just a little bit, pick up a pair of bookshelf speakers and add in a solid integrated amp. I will let you know that once you start on the path of being an audiophile there is no turning back. You are constantly upgrading, demoing new equipment, etc.

I was interested on those M200's but I don't want to hook it up to my computer with the headphone jack. I wanted something that hooked into the regular speaker connection on the back of the computer.
I go to the newegg site now and all i see is the T-120 offered.

If I can't hook them up normally, i may look at the Logitech ones tommyboy suggested. They probably hook up right to the computer.

I am hopefully planning on moving to a bigger house in about 4 years and at that point looking to purchase a really high end sound system. I live in a townhome now and #1, dont have the room plus having to deal with neighbors, etc.

They hook up normally. The hole on the sound card is a headphone jack.

Have to agree with Mugzy, i have the kilpsch 5.1 ultra and i dont believe they can be beat. I have owned klipsch since there first set and have not once been disappointed in the sound quality. I can max it out w/o any distortion, Very very very good set of speakers. Well worth every cent.

Kilpsch makes very efficent speakers, which is good when running with lower power amps. Their down fall is their highs, their use of horn tweeters makes their speakers very bright. Speaker tastes are per individual, I personally hate bright speakers. Bright speakers tire your ears. I prefer laid back speakers, as I find their mid ranges to be far superior. Swans are definitaly laid back.

So these are the speakers I bought today... they were $149.99, right about the amount I wanted to spend right now.
Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. 2 side speakers and a sub-woofer.
It sounds great. Much better than the Altec Lansing's that I was using. The biggest difference I notice is in the bass and sub woofer. I played a little bf42 today with them and was blown away. I never heard the game like that before. The guns are much more deeper and realistic sounding. My music sounds great on them too.
