Good Article about US economy, non-political

Postby cavalierlwt » Mon Sep 20, 2004 12:36 pm

This is a non-political thread, as the subject is way beyond politics and falls squarely in the domain of economics, capitalism, globalism etc.
Long article, but well written.

No... i dont think outsourcing is such a bad thing. I personally would LOVE to work 15 to 18 hours a day at a deadend job in my early fifites after losing my job that i had for almost 25 years. Man, the economy is in AWESOME SHAPE!

This makes me S. A. D. sad.:( I'm poor enough as it is. As long as I can afford to fuel my virtual life I can make it... (sobs)

Want another daunting excerpt to read (not as long) from Joe 'the man' Scarborough's new book. Not on outsourcing but on the sad state of affairs our economy is in and how congress is a bunch of A-holes:

One one hand, I'd like to see the third world become prosperous, but the reality is averaging the Western economies together with the third world economies doesn't yield a world wide middle class. It's like mixing the water from a small pond with the ocean, no real net result.

That is it exactly. There is a finite amount of resources in this world. It would be impossible for the entire earth's population to live at the standard of living of the average American. I agree that we are seeing an improvement in the standard of living in some of the countries outside the US while at the same time degrading the average standard of living in this country. There is a redistribution of wealth/resources.

I hate the idea of the middle class disappearing. On the other hand maybe we have brought this upon ourselves. I remember when Eastern Airlines went out of business, maybe 1992. The news report said the the average salary of their baggage handlers was 43K/year. (12 years ago, adjust for inflation) They belonged to the same union as the mechanics for some reason and that is why they had such a high salary for an unskilled job. Is it any wonder that eastern went out of business if they were paying their unskilled workers that well? I can understand how the mechanics (skilled workers) should get a decent wage but it was just silly to have the baggage handlers and mechanics compensated equally. Sometimes unions can cause their own workers harm in the long run.

*cough Delta pilots cough* The Delta pilots are killing the company with the insane salaries they make and the little work they do.

I would counter with this:
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Economy/bg1757.cfm

The idea of there being finite resources is saying economies are static and cannot grow; the same argument used by taxcut opponents.

The fact is there is much more outsourcing of jobs coming into the U.S. than there is going out. So in effect we are actually benefitting from the very practice that is so demagogued.

In any economy, even the best ones, it is possible to trot out multitudes of people that have a sad story to tell. Jobs are lost, jobs are gained, that's the way it is. The bottom line is, the days of leaving high school without even a GED and getting a 50k+ job at GM are over.

Seconded.

Economics=politics.

cavalierlwt,

Thank you for pointing out using % instead of total number. I find it funny that heritage uses % when you should use total number and total number when you should use %. Then again, how else are you to blur the facts?

I am sorry if it seemed political, it was not my intention. I'd close the thread if I could, with my apologies.
Perhaps Evan can close thread.
Once again, I apologize if overstepped the rules of the board.

Heh just relax man no need to delete or apologize. Don't let these citizen policemen get to you. If an admin steps in and tells you you've crossed the line then panic and start begging for forgiveness. :D

Side thought it would be cool if the forum admins could change their text color as it adds authority. Kinda like Blizzard does.

But now that KingofBeers has brought hell and religion into this it's doomed.:flame:
