I can almost guarantee his lack of medical insurance was not by choice. Also, your medical isn't free. It is paid for by each and everyone of you. The last time I checked there wasn't a fairy med insurance godmother that bestowed upon the population free health care.
That's what I'm saying. He chose (probably) not to buy insurance because he decided he couldn't afford it. It didn't seem necessary at the time. Now he won't be able to pay the huge bill, so you'll end up paying it through welfare or your premiums will go up.
Yet I'm sure he could afford a car, gas, TV, beer, etc. It's a question of priorities (I remember a lady telling me she couldn't afford private school for her son. During our 20-minute talk, she smoked three cigarettes).
The good thing with our system is, if you earn enough to pay taxes, then you're buying insurance, like it or not. I'm not paying for bozos who can afford it but won't. Plus, with all citizens covered, we get a hell of a good price. Also, a person on welfare ends up costing more, which is an incentive for governement to fight unemployment.
