thinking of getting a new computer

Postby EZC » Wed Jan 26, 2005 5:25 pm

tell me what u guys think of this since i need to upgrade my old one and my sister needed a computer for school. Im thinking that instead of upgrading i should just buy a new one. The only problem is that its a DELL.

Dimension 8400
pentium 4 processor 550 with ht(3.4ghz,800 fsb)
windows xp home edition
1gb dual channel DDR2SDRAM at 533mhz
160GB hard drive data security RAID 1 (2x 160gb SATA HDDS w/Native command queuing)
or 320GB Performance RAID 0 (2x 160gb SATA HDDS w/ Native Command queuing
Dual Drive 48xCD-RW Drive+ with free 16xDVD+/-RW w/dbl layer write
floppy drive (I still use floppys for paperwork)
comes with 17" monitor
256MB PCI Express x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVIDIA GEFORCE 6800
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (D) card w/dolby 5.1 and IEEE 1394
DELL 5650 5.1 Surround Sound speaker system with subwoofer (not really important i use headphones all the time)
Keyboard and mouse
it will come with WordPerfect office 12 and Norton ANti-virus.

All for $1,503 with taxes $1,620.
I know little to squat about computers and was hoping one of the computer guys here could tell me if it sounds like a ok deal. On top of it my sister is going to pay me $200 for mine. :)

that sounds like a good deal. Great price for what you are getting. Is the monitor flat? by that, i dont mean just flat screen but the body is thin.
Dells are great, i have one , had not had a single problem and it is 2 years old. Everyone i know that has a dell has no complaints.

DUDE!!! You're gettin' a Dell !! :)

Exactly what im looking for AND $1000 than i was willing to spend, EZC is that a 'special' deal or Dell's everyday pricing?

EZC, can you put a puzzle together?

I didn't know how to when I did my first one(Athlon 900 Mhz based). I went by some websites guide to build a good gaming PC(might have been HardOCP), ordered the parts from Newegg, and it was as easy as putting a puzzle together.

You could build your own EZ. But be careful, after you get
your parts, make sure your old computer is still running
and has internet access.
The idea here is that with this forum and many other
hardware forums you can build and test most any thing.

i am going to put it on my DELL card then transfer the balance to one of my Visa's (i only have three cards) cause it has a really low interest rate. Plus my sister needs a computer for school and she cant afford to buy one thats over $300. My current one is maybe $400 so im gonna give it to her for $200. Also i dont have the time to make a new computer. but i have till 11pm central time to make my decision so i will wait until i see more opinions. Thanks guys.

go to extreme tech, toms hardware, arstechnica... lots of places that give guidance and compatible hardware on building your own. Once you build your own you get savy on upgrades for you machine and milking your systme so you dont have the big $ outlay... you can do it at a couple hundred at a time. Keep that old machine new every few months.
