NEW YORK -- Hundreds of students from around the city opted for anti-war rallies over class on Wednesday, gathering at Hunter College as part of a national student strike against U.S. military action in Iraq.
"Students, this war has to be stopped," speaker Daniela Cornejo, a 19-year-old City University of New York student, told the cheering crowd. "Every individual has the power to do this."
The rally united college and high school students in opposition to the war. Many of the younger group gathered in Union Square and Washington Square Park, then marched or rode the subways _ dubbed "peace trains" for the day _ to the East Side rally.
"If we don't come out, then our opinion isn't heard by the White House, by anyone," said 10th-grader Bernard Mantel, 16, who was among several Dalton School students gathering at Union Square.
The students carried colorful banners and peace signs, with some dancing to the beat of drums carried by demonstrators. It was a peaceful gathering, with one arrest for disorderly conduct after a brief scuffle between students and police in Union Square.

A coalition of peace activist groups also planned a "National Moratorium to Stop the War on Iraq" for Wednesday and asked people to call in sick or close their businesses to show their anti-war sentiment.
Later Wednesday, more than 250 protesters marched past the midtown Manhattan offices of Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer, both D-N.Y., where they lit candles and shouted anti-war slogans.
Not everyone agreed with the anti-war sentiment. Sisters Kate and Allie Dunn came down from Westchester County to express their support of the Bush administration.
"Remember 9/11?" asked a sign carried by 18-year-old Kate.
