That Kevlar armor is one the few instances that you really get some great benefits for all of our tax dollars. Can you imagine not having the armor and fighting a country that does? It must be pretty bad to shoot a guy square in the chest and have him pop right back up unharmed and shooting in your direction. I am really scared if the day ever comes when we find ourselves on the losing edge of technology. Picture Japan doing it to us: They are smart and high tech, their economies been sh*t for a while, maybe some ill will is brewing over there. Then, boom!, they come at us like their the aliens from Independance Day (the movie, not the holiday). Invisible jets, force fields, lasers, etc.
This is just the weird crap I think of when I am goofing off at work

Japan has no navy. And their military is feeble. Even if their technology was 30 years ahead of us we would still win. We gots nukes! They don't.

No, don't use the facts of today when doing a 'what if'
Ya gotta use your imagination.

There was a book called "War in 2020" that had as a plot Japan supplying Islamic armies with high tech weaponry, unconventional weaponry. In this book they made a neural weapon called the 'scrambler', kind of an energy ray. When it hit the soldiers, it permanently destroyed their high-level nervous system. They couldn't move, talk, etc. They could thnk rationally,breath, swallow, shit, and piss, but that's all.... permanently.
See, you gotta think outside the box when you're daydreaming about weird crap.

Besides, if their tech was 30 years ahead of us, they would have nukes or something worse, plus be able to shoot down our nukes. Imagine 2005 America up against 1975 America, stealth weapons, computers, etc.

NO WAY! 1975 our military was in shambles, morale was at an all time low Remember, the Vietnam war, which featured a draft, had just come to a pretty miserable end. We were in bad shape in 1975, plus going up against our modern, computer assisted, all volunteer,stealth technology military...it would be slam dunk if you don't involve nukes.
Remember a few years later, we couldn't even pull a rescue mission off to get our hostages out of Iran. Iran held hostages for 440+ days, over a year, and we couldn't do anything about it.

I was just a kid in the 70s, but our military was at it's lowest peak probably since pre-WWI. Deserters, drug use, poor attitude was rampant. The soldiers we have today are pretty much motivated and well trained. The military remained in shoddy condition until the Reagan years. The Draft really destroys a military, combine the Draft and an unpopular war and you have a lot of soldiers who have no desire to be in the military, no aptitude for it, working in randomly chosen jobs. Besides, this all off the subject. I say watch those Japanese! A country full of smart engineers, down on their luck, pride is hurt -- think Germany in the early 1930s. Imagine them selling these superweapons to someone else, though, maybe Iran or the Chechens --look out Comrades!

Yeah, he's definitely nicer guy than I am. The only reason I would revive him would be to ask his home address. Then I'd re-kill him, and then burn his house down.

yeah it sux knowing someone over there. my best friend is stationed in some small town, they won't let him carry nades though cause of some accident. He'll be on leave in september though

The word is there will be a drawdown (reduction of forces) starting in October, through April of next year. British forces will be reduced from (I believe) 8000 to 3000 and US forces from 160,000 to 66,000. Coalition soldiers are supposed to start handing the dangerous duties over to Iraqi Army in the big cities, like patroling and raids, and will serve as backup or additional muscle during bigger battles.
I can't say how things will eventually turn out in Iraq, but if this news holds true, it's the beginning of the end for our large scale military involvement.
