Good thing we created a Homeland Security department and improved our Emergency Response taskforces nationwide. Yep, that was money well spent.

Loving the sarcasm there, hehe.
I find it unbelieveable that it's taking so damn long to organize any real effort to help these people. Shit, it'll take another couple of days for the government to pass the $10B proposal to help the victims of Katrina out and allow FEMA to operate with enough funds.
How is it possible that we organized a huge tsunami fundraiser and emergency response teams when Indonesia was hit, but it's taking us forever and a day to get the help our own citizens needs?!
Maybe its about time we started to concentrate on our own country, our own problems instead of everyone elses. There is no need. Let other countries fend for themselves. I don't see anyone else rushing to our aid.

Bush was initially turning down aid from other countries.

Nevermind then, didn't have a chance to read anything about foreign nations wanting to help. It's sad though, that other nations are responding faster to the NO situation than we are.

Yeah, it is sad. Some of these countries have a lot of experience with huge floods and disasters, it was foolish for us to shun their offers, we should have brought them in ahead of time, just in case.
When this is all said and done, I would like to see an investigation and audit of everything related to Homeland Security. We spent a lot of money, I kinda wondering where it went. One of the big issues they talked about was communications. Now I hear communications is in shambles, there's no coordination etc. Bear in mind too that we had advanced warning about Katrina. Somebody has some explaining to do. New Orleans is one of our biggest ports, easily could be considered one of the top ten, if not top five, terrorist targets in America. For it to fail so badly, even with advanced warning, is very disturbing.

You cannot blame most of those people for being there and not evacuating. Most of those that could leave, did. The people who were left behind were the poor who could not afford to leave. Those without transportation, namely, a car. Granted. There are definitely people who stayed behind and thought they could tough it out or whatever. New Orleans is on a whole, a pretty depressed city and a lot of it's residents were/are poor. Which leads me to my second point.
If you were to give everyone a million dollars as someone suggested, you would not have this kind of thing happening. Why do people loot? Because they want something they don't have and can't get otherwise. Be it food or other items. They're looting because they're poor and they will never see an opportunity like this to own stuff they've always wanted. As far as looting of the casinos go. I see great irony and poetic justice in that. Woot! Go looters!
Now I know that atrocities are being committed and I imagine it will come down to the fittest/strongest/meanest sons of bitches ruling the city and if I were there and had no gun, well I would do all I could to get one because relief from the authorities doesn't seem to be in sight. Might seems to make right there at the moment and I'll be damned if I would put myself at the mercy of some asshole with a gun.
Law and order is definitely needed down there ASAP along with the massive evacuation for those stranded. If I may state the obvious.

There's been a huge convoy of buses bringing survivors here to Houston all day to stay at the Astrodome for shelter.
This is truly sad.

the ones doing this shit are scumbags anyways. scumbags are world-wide, not nation-wide.

Could not have said it better.
I'm originally from New Orleans and everyone can blame the federal government if you want but the problem is really due to the local government in that area, for years the city has been getting worse due to the politicians that have been elected to high positions who were as corrupt as they could be. (There is a reason whey I live in another state now).
This has been a known problem for many decades and it seems that all those so called tax payer meetings where they are supposed to figure out what to do in these situations went to steak and jumbo shrimp and a grand ole time. The levee system should have been upgraded decades ago, not within the last 4 years.
P.S. they were providing free transportation to the Superdome. Many people simply stayed because they thought it would just be like every other hurricane in the last couple years.
also, being poor and "oppressed" is still no excuse to steal someone elses property. (oppressed, when someone uses that term to describe someone in the USA, just turn and leave the conversation, there is no hope for them).

The levee system is top notch, for its level of protection.
It was only constructed to withstand a Cat 2/3(why not full out 5, when you're a flippin port city is beyond me), so only natural for it to not work properly.
No way on gods green earth will they have that city even CLOSE to being 30% restored by the time Mardi Gras comes for next year.

I don't excuse the looters (people grabbing TVs, robbing, raping), they're as bad as it gets, but the federal and state govt DO NOT GET A FREE PASS ON THIS SHIT!!!
There are thousands of people that are on dry ground, they are dying. A reporter was stating that less than 50 miles away, dry ground all the way, the electricity is on, water is running, there's a friggin Wendy's open for Christ's sake. They need to move the f**** people out of there. Ask every school to donate their school buses. Ask people to donate their boats/skiffs ect. We're not talking about millions of people, we are talking a couple of hundred thousand. These goddamn retards in the govt and FEMA should do everyone a favor and shoot themselves in the head. Those people at the superdome and the conventions center would be better off if someone got on a bullhorn and said 'You're on your own, head north to dry land and just walk to the nearest town'
Instead they are keeping them there, telling them that they will be taken care of eventually, but they don't follow through with the promises.
As for the looters, tonight and tomorrow they are going to get theirs, and it's going to be brutal. A couple of my friends are leaving tomorrow (Natl Guard, Army reserve) and this shit is going to end real quick. As for the law abiding citizens, they are fucked. They are dependant on the govt, and by the time the govt comes through, many of them are going to be dead, dead of INCOMPETENCE.
Like I say, glad we spent all that money on Homeland Security and Emergency Response upgrades.

I am not saying looting is ok as a general pass. What I am saying is that sometimes the law is not applicable in certain circumstances. Sometimes when it comes down to me or him, well damn, you're going to die dude. There are people there who for whatevever reason feel no need to follow societal norms. They are raping and murdering. There are no resources that you can turn to for food or water. There is no law. In that context, if I were in that situation, I would without hesitation loot to support and protect myself, my family and my friends and I would not lose a wink of sleep. Anarchy is ruling there and in that kind of situation if you want to put yourself at the mercy of animals, well I won't stop you but you sure as hell aren't going to get in my way either or ever convince me to do the same.
I am not on the side of the murderers and rapists. I am simply on the side of not starving, having loved ones (or anyone else for that matter) raped, murdered, expiring because of a lack of services or just generally being at the mercy of others.
I am not excusing the conduct of the criminals who are preying upon the weak. I think they should be shot on sight.
Now having said that, I can't help thinking about how such things come to be. How there is apparently a sizeable population of people waiting for the opportunity to rape and pillage. I think it has to do with the rifts in society. The racial divide, the economic divide and the social divide. Everything is connected. I think that what is happening there is a taste of the future for the United States if we don't do something about the ever widening divide between the economic and social classes. Once that divide widens enough, these type of upheavals will become more commonplace until they lead to total anarchy. Doom and gloom prediction, yes. History? Yes. The future? I think so. I think it's just a matter of time until it happens unless the divide is bridged.
Mixed in with all of this is also the problems that arise when you jail a large portion of a population's males, who are then not there to be role models or guide their sons (mostly and to a lessor degree daughters) while at the same time you teach them how to be better criminals in 'institutions' then you release them back into the general population. It's a horrible cycle and society will end up paying the ultimate price in the end.

I don't have a problem with people protecting themselves, or looting for food/water/medicine. I don't think the the looters are nearly as big a problem as the retards running FEMA/Homeland Security. The cops and rescue workers are doing their best, its the worthless shit-for-brains that are running the show. The Gov of LA, The head FEMA, right on up to GWB are all fucking retards.

New Orleans is a really dirty city atleast everything surrounding Mardi Gras. Anyone think this has a more spiritual meaning behind it? Besides the fact that our President is hardly interested in our environment. Well, we did it to ourselves as a whole. If you don't plan on taking care of the environment than these are the kind of events that you will continue to see. Which brings me back to the gov. People really need to wake up and realise that our planet is just as important as our health which we continue to take care of. Well most of us, lol.. And I'm usually not the typical environmentalist either but this all really makes sense to me on a large scale.
