petition help
I was curious if anybody here on the ecgn forums has ever been the spearhead of a petition and may be able to give me some helpfull hints:) First im sure you'd like to know our situation and why we are starting a petition, I live in a waco, Texas(small town with nothing to do) and our skatepark just got torn down.. because the city decided to cut funding to it because of problems.. the repair costs do to the damage of skateboarding (unavoidable) they sold our ramps to some local buyer.. and now we have no skatepark and we were told that tickets will be issued if we are caught skating anywhere where there is a no skateboarding sign posted or if someone calls in and complains, at baylor its a ticket..they take your board and your permently banned from campus..etc... well we have around 800 signatures already and are growing everyday.. and have the support from alot of adults who are being a big help and trying to get us on the news and all that.. but anyways thats our situation curious if you had any suggestions to offer that could maybe help us?:) thanks for your time if you actually read all that lol

There have been several skate parks built near where I live (Vancouver, BC). All the new ones are concrete and pretty cool looking (too late for me though I stopped skating long ago). One in particular has been built under an overpass which would have been wasted space otherwise, maybe you should be looking for some type of space like that. Concrete is definately the way to go, low repair cost compared to wood ramps etc. Good luck Snow.
Hat makes a valid point. After reading your post, Snow, all I could think was that you now have the perfect opportunity to make a little money. Create your own business of making and managing your own skate park. Seriously. If you think the area you live in will benefit from having one (i.e. if you really think there are enough people in the area who'd want one), then build it.
Think Field of Dreams, man. I guess in this case, Half-Pipe of Dreams.

Insurance is one of the primary reasons most governments, regardless of size pull the plug on skate-parks. One law suit regardless of disclaimers or waivers will close a park for sure.
My company did a feasibility survey about a year ago. Due to restrictions of contract, I can't tell you it's exact results but I can tell you unless you have an avid community of skaters willing to PAY for entrance, you could be in the RED very rapidly.
If you do pursue the venture check out this link:

Good Luck.

you also have to consider where the starting capital will come from and do lots of that financial analysis stuff (i shold know specific names but i don't pay enough attention in class).

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.

You can never really trust anything you read in the papers, but... It sounds like the skate park was going down hill. Not necessarily because of the skaters, but problems were appearing with more and more frequency. (i.e. drugs, graffiti, vandalism, etc.). You can't blame the neighbors who want to close the park. They are worried about their kids and property.
I really like what HatRack and Ender had to say.
START YOUR OWN BUSINESS and don't rely on the government.
Will it be easy? No, of course not, but nothing in life that is worth anything is easy. There are many good books out there about starting a business. I recommend "The One Minute Millionare" for starters. Next read "Rich Dad Poor Dad". When you have finished reading both books PM me or start a new thread. I recommend everyone start a business, if for no other reason than a tax break on your purchases.
