At the risk of being hated, should I chime in that I was an RA as well? As for why dorms/student housing 'needs' them... I broke up a lot of crazy parties and stopped general mayhem from disrupting the people who were trying to just get through the bullshit of college. Believe it or not, some people want to do well and are hindered by people who screw around. You're aware you're supposed to be there at college to learn, right?

A lot of kids go completely nuts. Maybe their parents beat them down all their lives. Maybe they've been in Catholic school. Maybe they've been forced to wear duct tape on their privates... who knows. All I know is that some kids get 'free' from the all seeing eye of parental control and they go insane.

Other than all that "peace patrol" crap I opened the Break Room on my duty nights to allow students a safe, neutral place to mingle and get to know each other. For a lot of the, they were only 18-19 and it was their first time away from home. They were shy or scared and alone. I tried to soften that psychological blow by throwing small safe events for them to attend.

All that being said, lecturing you on "behavioral issues"? Get real - what a twat. The most I ever said to anyone was "stop wrestling or moving furniture... whatever you're doing up here. The guys downstairs are trying to get some work done."

My roommate and I were the "guys downstairs" and were trying to play a network game of Red Alert, but the constant thud-bang-thud was distracting. :)

Always good to hear from my fans.

As an RA, as I said, we were more like counselors than anything else. If there was some sort of unrest or uncivilized behavior, it wasn't our job to do anything about it. We could call someone else, but we weren't to overstep our bounds. Rather, we held an open door policy, especially for freshmen.

Need a shoulder? That's what I was there for. Need to vent? That's what I was there for. Need to figure out where this building is or where that admin office is? That's what I was there for. Have an issue with your roommate? I could tell you where you can voice your complaints or if you don't feel like you can, then I could do it for you. Having trouble with classes? I had a host of numbers for you to call where you can seek outside help and study groups. Want to schedule something that will utilize the social room? I could arrange for that. Need someone to act as a mediator in an argument between you and your roommate? That wasn't really my job, but since I knew everyone on the floor and got along with everyone, I'd do it for both of their sakes. Need to chill out or having a hard time adjusting or coping with some sort of personal issue? That's what I was there for. Need a smoke? Though I wasn't supposed to, you could bum one of mine. Afraid, scared, feel alone, suicidal, or just don't know what the hell you're doing? I could help.

My door was open for anyone, residents on my floor or not, to come in, chill out, vent, voice their opinion, find help for personal or school related issues, and to just be available.

It wasn't my job to make anyone like me, it was my job to help people be comfortable with themselves, with their school work, and with their stay in the dorm. Somehow that offends you and makes me a "prick" and that's fine.

I do have fun terrorizing her though. The "panty" thing is the least of it. ;)

Ender put the RA in a pretty good context.
Also, I think you've answered your own question with that one statement. That said, I've seen some 18 yr. olds do some pretty stupid shit. I know at 18 I've done some pretty stupid shit as well.

I think it's just the one on my floor who is a total cunt, and I just celebrated this by writing CUNT in huge letters on her door (as well as put a couple of centipedes on her pillow). I was joking about you, =ender=. The one I'm stuck with just wrote a kid up tonight because he smelled like pot. Yeah, one of those Substance Nazi RAs.

I'm doing quite well on my own and I'm not much of a partier. SHE'S the one who pulled the fire alarm to go through everyone's fridge while we evacuated the building.

I can understand the anxiety of being away from home, but I spent most of my life away from home so I can't relate at all.

I'm thinking of being an RA myself but for the sole purpose of free housing and meals. I'd never write anyone up. I'd probably never be in my room either. Ever.

lemme get this right. The RA pulled the alarm? Does she know she can be arrested for that. Not to mention be held criminally negligent if something were to happen to fire personnel (or anyone else) responding to an malicious false alarm.

This all very confusing to me. Here you're (legally) an adult at 18 and there is no RA or any kind of "adult" supervision in colleges. If someone is a nuisance, someone else will likely call the cops, like at any apartment block in town.

Anyone foolish enough to call a college student a "kid" here would likely end up slugged.

Wow. I think there's a violation of a few laws in that action if someone looks hard enough.

Yikes.

What was she hoping to find? Even if she did find anything she couldn't act on it becasue it was an illegal search...

I think 21 as a legal drinking age is pretty silly. Think of all the things you can do legally before that which are worse. Like for example is you are a soldier. You can go to war at 16 and kill or die for your country but you can't have a drink afterwards. How full of shit is that?

No harm done, girl. Unless my wife, family, or heritage are under fire, I really don't take anything personally.

As Foxtrot said, this is illegal. I'd love to see how the FDNY would react to such an act. If it can be proven, she can also get shitcanned from being an RA.

Your lovely RA seems to be exactly the kind of person who shouldn't be an RA. I'd be complaining to the Resident Life staff or someone above her, especially if you know there are other students that have issues with her. Hell, get as many people on the hall to sign a typed complaint and it'll be taken more seriously.

Chacal, I think a lot of RAs give the position a bad name, as girl has shown. Their job is to be an "assistant" to the residents as the name implies. They're supposed to be more peer counselors than anything else... at least that's how we were trained.

I've heard RAs at many schools get such benefits (free or discounted tuition, room, or board and sometimes a larger dorm room), however, we didn't get any of those things.

You have to be 18 in order to enlist in the US armed forces. But, that doesn't change your argument any. I totally agree: it IS full of shit.

I consider anyone more than 10 years younger than I am a Kid :)

I told the mother of all RAs about it. She said it had been planned in advance so they the RAs could search our rooms for alchohol and pour it out, and that they do this periodically. Apparently, the Fire Dept. had been notified in advance. Ironically, she's the only one who wrote people up for having beer in their fridge. (She also found some Jack's under my fucking bed.) A friend caught her red-handed pulling it while she turned the corner.

I found another centipede and a variety of cockroaches.
