Digital Camera Question
My wife is looking into getting a digital camera soon. Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what the best one is, if a high pixel number is good, etc. She's currently looking at Pentax Optio, it's got 6 megapixels, 2 inch LCD screen, 12 meg internal memory and USB port. Is that any good or is there better? I'm kinda dumb when it comes to digital cameras LOL. Any help, advice, or suggestions are appreciated.

6 megapixels is pretty good...There is better but Its not nessisary...theres lots of good cameras out there...I would suggest a Sony...I know that Nikon Proffesional cameras are great cameras (I have a D1). It just depends on what you want to get from your camera...
I have the Canon SD200. There are newer models out now, mine is a year and a half old or so. It takes great pics for the casual photographer, easy to use and more importantly is very small. Not as thin as some of the newer ones out now but about the thickness of a deck of cards. The price is very reasonable, especially if you are just getting started. I think I got mine for around $200. or so.

thanks to Spirit of Me for the sig!

There are lots of great camera's out there. You have to find one that has the features you want...For me, it was the Panasonic FZ5....12x optical Zoom, 5 Megapixels, and the ever important Image Stabilization (a must for the wife)!!
Good luck....
Good luck....

I got a Sony DSC-100, 5.2M Pix. Takes great pictures.
After that came the p150 which I have and it is really really awesome. 7.2 megapixels but I adjusted it down to 5 megapixels. The newer model to this is the p200 which is only like $350 and it has a bigger screen would be my suggestion for a compact but powerful point and shoot camera.
a 5 megapixel shot from a 7.2 megapixel camera will look better than a 5 megapixel shot taken on a regular 5 megapixel camera.

I'm currently running a Konica Minolta A200 at 8 mp. As mentioned it really matters what you want because there are a ton of them out there to choose from. Can you post some of the things you and your wife are looking for in a camera?

Megapixels are not always the most important factor. Lens quality will have a lot to do with the quality of your photos. A lower end digital SLR (single lens reflex) at 5 or 6 megapixels is leaps and bounds above your point and shoot 8 megapixel camera. The Nikon D70 is an excellent camera at about $800 or so. The lens that comes with it is something like 18-70mm which is good for panoramas to portraits. You can buy the body standalone (without the lens) for about $400 or so, but with the lens is a great deal (just take a look at what it costs for a decent lens). Also, the rechargeable battery that comes with the D70 will probably save you a few bucks over the life of the camera. I believe Cannon has a similar entry level SLR. Both provide excellent depth of field and shutter speed.

This is the one the wife and I bought about 6 months ago. She loves to make pictures and movies and has been very happy with it.

flapjack is right also, the bigger cameras with the bigger sensors do make a better photo with less megapixels, although it sounds like you are looking for a simple point and shoot.
