Weed Yes/no

Nightcrawler,
Actually, Robin is sharing some facts. I don't see anything more out of you than sheer emotion. Before using yourself as proof of something, I would suggest you taking a course in or at least learn about the field of statistics and epidemiology. You will find that one person is statistically insignificant. You can't use one case to justify a conclusion. It takes numerous cases. Research has been done involving numerous cases and the results of which I posted earlier.
As for your specific example. I did not say that marijuana took away ALL motivation; merely that it decreased motivation. The fact that you have some drive is not proof that the research in this area is false. To make that statement you would have to know how your level of motivation in life would be different if you did not smoke marijuana. Obvioulsy, this comparison cannot be made. That is why we rely on studies involving large numbers of people.

Robin,
Thank you for the thoughtful contribution to our discussion. You make some good points. When compared to alcohol, marijuana is not nearly as deadly. This is an excellent point and you could also note that the same is true when comparing marijuana and tobacco. These drugs cause significantly more mortality and morbidity than marijuana does. However, the fact that marijuana can have deleterious effects on one's life still exists, regardless of whether you're comparing it to more deadly chemicals.
The facts that I stated earlier involving the amotivational syndrome etc. are all derived from current research in the area. I'm sure you are aware of these studies already as you mentioned you have done a lot of investigation into this area. What you stated about no one dying from marijuana overdose is true or false depending on how you define 'overdose.' Many have died from taking marijuana but they did have underlying medical conditions; often that they were not aware of. However, for the most part, you are correct in that marijuana usually does not kill you in the short term. What does concern me is the long-term problems that are associated with it.
I congratulate you on your success in high school. However, please see my reply to Nightcrawler about the difficulties of using yourself as proof of a conclusion. Statistically, we are all insignificant. Also, keep in mind that while you were able to excel in high school despite marijuana use; it was only high school. I assume (hope?) with scores like yours you will want to go further. Things are much more difficult in college and astronomically more difficult in graduate-level studies. At the higher levels, it often takes everything you've got. I, for one, would not want to be found wanting because of a recreational substance I was using; whether it be alcohol, marijuana or any other drug..

mmmm.... a nice touchy subject.. Apparently we can see the line being drawn here.. the majority who disagree with weed use all seem to have a personal story (tragedy) involving the use of the drug.. however the ones that enjoy the benifits of the drug generally don't see the downsides to the drug. Granted, as mentioned by Robin earlier, a drug is a drug.. and like any other drug (from asprin to LSD), any drug taken in excess will become harmfully dangerous. Do I support marijauna use ?? Yes I do, but only if used in reasonable quantites. Just like any beer drinker, drink excessively and you turn into an ass.. possibly killing others. I have yet to hear of a pot smoker becoming violent or in a high-speed chase with the police (again talking about the user, not the seller). I have occasionally used the drug in my past, with the extreme being once a week in my college years, and I would love to still be able to enjoy it again maybe once a month, but with random drug screenings, I cannot take the risk. Being in the IT field for the past 8 years, I have found smoking weed a vacation from reality that I am able to obtain without drinking excessively and puking later, only to have a massive hangover the morning after. I would also have to support the argument for the lack of motivation, and again... the more you smoke it is more likely you will just hang out around the house ordering pizza (once again, been there). And to all of you who think that all pot smokers lead a life of shit.., I am 29 yrs young, married with a house, kid, dog.. and help manage LAN/WAN for the 4th largest bank in the U.S. I did graduate from High School and College, and am constantly getting computer certs as needed. Any downsides to pot that I have had personally?? I had gained about 20lbs. due to munchies..
coming off of my soapbox now...

I fully agree with you BurningWick. Anyone who does any drug does so of his own free will, and you must know that with any drug, there are risks. I am in no way trying to say that Marijuana or any other drug is healthy for you. I am aware of many different studies across the country in relation to Marijuana and its relation to depression, but my opinion is that the drug will overpower you if you let it. I know that some of you have had bad experiences with Marijuana, I've had them with alcohol and simply feel that Marijuan is a safe alternative to alcohol. If your going to get fucked up, you might as well be safe about it. Good Debate!!!!!!!!
