man i used to love DMB, but then he sobored up and found god and the music just seemed to get worse after crash. I haven't heard his newest shit yet so i might have to give it a try for old times sake.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit.
Yeah the show was great. The Verizon wireless Arena in Manchester is sooo much better than the garden in Boston. You can actually see the band.

Dave Matthews is a sell out.
Works years in college bars, builds a solid fan base, releases an album that sells enough to release a full studio album(huge seller), leads to a second studio album(even bigger seller), then, after all that hard work, sells out and starts releasing radio pop songs made for the airwaves and record sales.
What a shame.

That's kind of how I've been feeling about DMB as well. I remember them from back when they'd do colleges and bars as well and they were absolutely incredible... and approachable! My only real beef with them now isn't so much the "pop song/sellout" thing, it's the fact that I used to be able to see a show of theirs for a reasonable price. Now, their ticket prices are disgustingly OVERpriced. I know they aren't the only band that overcharges for their tix, but they were one of the first to piss me off about it years ago (circa 2000/2001).
I miss the Recently/Remember Two Things era.
EDIT: Hell, I used to be a member of the Minarets fan forum/group in '93/'94. Then they started charging a fee to be in their official fanclub. Yikes. As I watched the band become more about the money and less about the fans over the years, I pretty much decided that I'd stop supporting them. I think the music is still solid (not NEARLY as good as they used to be... the sound is just not there anymore), but their direction wasn't and I won't give them another dime. Of course, they want to make money... you're in a band, you're popular, you want to make money... makes sense. Just don't forget about the original fanbase... and that's kind of how I felt DMB lost focus.
/end rant

Move as a team, never move alone. Welcome to the Terrordome!
Yeah in music and in life change is inevitable. I don't think I've heard a more overused term than "sellout" when it comes to bands. The real key was enjoying a live performance and having a good time with my friends. That to me was more valuable than DMB's future.

To this day, the album Crash is one I used to give demo's of audio equipment. That album is recorded and mixed perfectly.

I have a hard time believing that anyone just making music is a 'sell out'. I can see if they are making commericials and such. But in order to sell out, purposely to gain more money, it implies that a group knows how to make song that is a hit. I just have a hard time believing that there is a 'formula' for writing a hit, and that some people with integrity know the formula but don't use it. I think bands just go in whatever direction they go in. Sometimes when they are just starting out, their life is a certain way, and they write songs that they can relate to. Get rich and famous, your perspective changes. Maybe it's tough to sing the blues when you're rich and famous. Maybe it gets hard to be funky and weird when everybody loves you. I'm not a DMB fan, I am just intrigued whenever I hear someone talk about selling out. I say, if you know the formula, please tell it to me, I'll make a million bucks!

Funny how DMB pops up here every so often, and it usually winds up turning into the same discussion.
That said...When you start making music to satisfy a different group of people, forgetting what it was that got you there in the first place. I understand making a song or two...Or even a whole album devoted to bringing in more listeners to hear your music...That's cool with me. Though, the die-hard fans usually roll their eyes at that point. But when you've completely forgotten where you came from and decide to take a shit on the people that were there for you in the beginning, that to me, is selling-out your fans.

how do you know they were *able* to make the same style of music that their fan base loves? That's my point. Maybe they don't know how to make music that will appeal to their fan base. If it was a simple as following a formula, they could just keep using the formula. But what if they are forced to make whatever come out of themselves. I'm not a musician, I don't know how it works, I'm just pointing out this possibility. I'm reminded of something Stephen King once said about his book 'Cujo' (a book about a mother and her kid trapped in a car by a rabid St.Bernard). People complained to him, why did you let the kid die in the end, after all that. He responded that he didn't want the kid to die, he never imagined when he started the book that he'd kill the kid, he said the kid just....died.
