WWII color pictures!

Postby cavalierlwt » Fri Jan 13, 2006 8:50 pm

I hope this isn't a repost, I searched on 'war' and 'color' didn't see it.

This page has some amazing color photos from WWII. I guess color film was rare for the average joe, but some soldiers had it. It's pretty freaky, some of the pics look like snapshots from the last 20 years of so, not WWII. We're just so used to WWII=black and white.
Here's a sample:

Nice sites Allah. Some of the pictures looks so amazingly good, some of those photographers were uber talented (or just plain lucky). I love the candid pics of everyday people.

If you go to the last link I posted you can see even higher resolution versions of those pictures which look even more incredible.
It is amazing because as you said, we're so used to thinking of things in black and white back then, not in living breathing color.

if anyone uses WinMX or DC++ for file sharing i have World War II in Color video series and lots of pics of WWII planes and a bunch of great books from Squadron Signal Publications and Osprey about the different units from WWII. The books have a lot of good pics and plattes of armour, planes and soldiers. I go by the same name on WinMX and DC++. Or pm me here and I will arrange to get them to you.

A little girl once asked me if I was black and white when I was young. I said yes but my grandfather was sepia. She didn't get it of course.

Either evolution exists or intelligent design had version numbers...

When I was young I bought a few issues of a French WWI history magazine (first edited 1966) with lots of colour WWII pictures in it. Most came from the German side and were taken by photographers from the propaganda ministry attached to fighting units.

I still have them, I'm looking at Rommel inspecting a FLAK88 position in the desert, he's wearing shorts with his general's uniform, which looks pretty funny.
