I believe what this is talking about is OEM versions of Windows XP, ie Windows XP prepacked for a specific brand and model of PC (Dell for instance)
I've changed MBs three times on one license of XP. I had to call each time, and they ask if you're only running it on one computer.

I have an OEM version that I got off Ebay... Its a full OEM, and I have to call everytime I install it as well.

Just dont tell them you replaced the board.... tell them your upgraded your drive...

Personally I think its super greedy of MS to do that. Hopefully they wont get away with it...

Give Apple a couple of years to hit their stride with the Intel based Macs. Things should get interesting then. As it stands now, I don't see how M$ is going to get Vista to sell big without a compelling reason to switch away from XP. Although I noticed they are releasing the next version of Halo for PC only on Vista. I wonder if they can get other companies to do the same?

What what what?!

When I drop a few hundred bucks on a new mobo, I have no desire to spend a few hundred more to get another copy of XP.

Of course, I can get it cheap from School, but what about hobbyists? They have to buy it retail most of the time.

Microsoft is greedy, hands down. No reason for this.

The single best thing about having a mac was that they gave you the operating system for free on a disc when you bought the computer. Was it abused? Sure I had ever new system that was released till they started getting to big for cds and went on dvd (got no dvd drive on my mac). But in order to get that I had to know a lot of people with macs and lets face it they wouldn't have bought their mac without some big recommendations from me. I think mac knew that, I also think they knew it was the right thing to do.

Microsoft are just greedy, I agree with ryan. Considering all the subsidiary programs you will buy off them just because you are using windows it's very ungenerous to pull shit like this. It's also very dumb as it's gonna drive reasonable people into thieving (misusing) the software they have and as you know once you get on the thieved software wagon it's very hard to get off...

I read a book by Mark Minasi (he writes a lot of very good Microsoft OS Manuals) where he's talking about TCP\IP and how to test it.

He describes pinging domains, like http://www.yahoo.com, but goes on to say that you can't ping http://www.microsoft.com probably because Microsoft hasn't quite figured out how to charge you for it.
