The BBc are gonna start transmitting TV progams in HD this year probably, it wont make a difference if u dont have a HD TV, but if u do have a HD TV there will be a much better quality.

I just bought my first HDTV last week. A Samsung for $450.00. I love it.
I already have a DVD recorder, but I don't think it can record in HD.

Noway i would pay $700+ for a player, even more so when it cant record.

I will wait at least a year after blu-ray comes out before I get either..

Who wants to buy one now, there's a 50/50 chance the one you buy will be obsolete, similar to Betamax vs VHS.

That thing is pretty cool. but 900 bucks? Not to mention, aren't normal DVD's supposed to be that crisp or high def quality anyway? I mean thats why DVD's are so much better than VHS. IDK

normal DVDs are 720x480 pixels, true HD is 1920x1080 pixels.
I am just amazed that these two groups allowed themselves to go this far with competing standards. Think of how much money they invested, and it will come down to a 50/50 crapshoot, winner takes all. Even more Amazing: Sony is one the major players. They should know better.

Nope.

DVD's are either 480i or 480p depending on your player and TV.

HD DVD and BR are 720p/1080i/1080p.

Do not buy either player though, wait for the dual format players to come out. That way if one dies, you are not screwed.

If you have a HDTV now, with either a DVI or HDMI input, get the oppo player, which upconverts current dvd's to either 720p or 1080i. It is by far one of the best ones for picture quality, bested only by a multiple thousand dollar Denon.

AHHH I see. I would like to see an HD movie on a nice plasma HD tv. I am kinda an electronics buff, well i like cool hometheaters and all the equipment. My kinda dream/goal is when i get done with college and get a job is to have a theater in my house. That would rock!

many good internet brands out there. I have the RS550(Rocket line) as my mains in my theater/music room.

I demoed Paradagm, B&W, Phase Tech, Definitive and many other higher ends brands. Some models over twice the cost of the Rockets.

Rockets won hands down.

Sound is personal taste, though. These are 'laid back' speakers, as in not bright. I hate bright speakers(think Klipsch, where the high's get annoyingly ear piercing). Others will find laid back speakers to be hallow and bright speakers to be perfect.

One thing is for certain: Bose is nothing but marketing. Any company that points to Consumer Reports reviews as to how great they are, and advertising in Better Homes and Garden(not audiophilie publications) obviously is not high end.

There is a huge difference between high end speakers and mainstream speakers.

The first time you listen to an album you love on a properly configured set up you will think 'oh, THAT is what it is supposed to sound like' when you are hearing instruments you never heard before, imaging that makes it seem like it is a wall of sound(not two speakers)......... Man I love a properly set up system....... I can't fuckign wait to get home, kick on Elder Scrolls Oblivion and spin......hmm, today is warmer than it has been in awhile, how about David Bowie Hunky Dory.

No, maybe The Who's Next.

Last, edit, I swear. i know what I am listening to the second I get home(29 minutes from now).

Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense.
