Could have worked out a lot worse for him. Could have been any number of people at the other end and sending him to prison would have been low on the list of their priorities.
I'm still uneasy about this sort of police activity though and have a good few questions. Doesn't this classify as entrapment? Also how does the undercover guy get paid, does he get bonuses for catching people? If so isn't he gonna use any variety of dirty tactics to catch the guy? Did the guy initiate the explicit chat or did the agent? Will a transcript of the text be made public? etc...
Aside from that isn't sending a guy to prison anyway for being liable to commit a crime ethically a bit dodgy? He may have thought he was on with a child but semantically he really wasn't, the crime here only exists in the mind.
I agree the guys deserves prison time but I'd also want to be damn sure there were adequate checks on these undercover police activities if I was over there.
You have to consider the posibility that with a real teenage girl and not an agent, who is paid to be receptive, the crime may never had happened.

All very agreeable arguments. Kinda makes me think of Minority Report. Thats basically their defense is arresting him for having the thought and possibility to commiting this crime. Everyone would also need to examine the conversations to get a real feel of what was going on though.

Entrapment is when the officer offers it. If the officer is asked, it is not entrapment.
It is like putting an undercover on the street as a hooker. She has to get the john to ask what it costs for X, the officer can not just walk up to someone and say 'hey buddy, give me $20 and I'll blow you.'
The only difference is the hooker is some cop at a computer, waiting for these sick fucks to find them.

I bet when they found out who he was they made an air tight case. I hope he likes the view from the jail cell, what a dork.
Very true.. Although most of the other cases you hear about that they actually put the guy away, was that they arrested him when they were scheduled to actually meet up at a hotel or something. I just hope the police didn't jump the gun because of who he was just to get the publicity. Due-to-the-fact that they didn't bust him when they were scheduled to meet somewhere, then they may have trouble with the case, but of course this being said without reading the conversations.
Don't get me wrong he needs a rather harsh punishment, but the legal system is screwed up and full of loopholes.

Apparently, he told the cop his position and his real name.
Talk about a complete idiot.
