15,000 layer image file

Damen
This is my latest and most ambitious digital painting of a Chicago scene unveiled at Photoshop World in Miami on March 22, 2006.
It is a panorama of the Damen Station on the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit Authority.
Adobe Illustrator was used for generating the majority of the basic shapes as well as all the buildings in the Chicago skyline.
The rest was created in Photoshop.
• The image size is 40 inches by 120 inches.
• The flattened file weighs in at 1.7 Gigabytes.
• It took eleven months (close to 2,000 hours) to create.
• The painting is comprised of close to fifty individual Photoshop files.
• Taking a cumulative total of all the files, the overall image contains over 15,000 layers.
• Over 500 alpha channels were used for various effects.
• Over 250,000 paths make up the multitude of shapes throughout the scene.

That must take a hell of a time to load in Photoshop.

This guy should be able to make some decent money on the side doing a little work for video game developers. Those guys employ a lot of artists, and this guy certainly is a digital artist.

Unbelievable detail! That is so cool how he showed zoomed in images of the front of the train and the pay phone, without losing any detail!

Yeah very cool. If he did work for a developer imagine the rigs you would need to keep real time graphics in game of that scale. Amazing textures and depth, very impressive stuff, sure beats paint and canvas.

Just think with that knowledge you could make a game that would run really slowly on every computer...

Sorry, but I'm not impressed. Don't mean to be a jerk or anything, but why go to all that trouble? What's the purpose? To prove it could be done? To be the biggest, baddest, largest Photoshop drawing?

I'm not sure why I'm not impressed... maybe it's the subject matter. I don't know. Who (in their right mind) would spend 2000 hours/11 months) on this drawing? (I hope he was well paid for his efforts.)

Call me a jerk, but who cares if you can see the rust, on the nuts, holding the wheels to the axle of the carriage on the 15th car of the train? Who cares if you can see the reflections from the glass of the objects outside the train?

I don't see the point.

Graphic artists have portfolios to demonstrate what they're capable of, skill and creativity. So, this is something that will help him 'self himself' in his business. Graphic artist can earn a decent living, it's a great way to go as opposed to the classic starving artist route. I had a friend in college who was an arts major, big with sculpture and metalwork. The kid made decent money designing logos and signs for businesses in the area.

I don't see what the problem is, what bothers me is some one takes a urinal, flips it upside down, & writes their name on it and all of a sudden it's art.
