PS3 Price vs. Potential

Postby KDawg07 » Tue May 23, 2006 9:32 am

I've been reading around most of the gaming sites and forums and am suprised at the shock of people's reactions to the $599 price point of the 60gig PS3. For what the system offers I think it is a good buy. I mean us PC gamers spend that kind of money on video cards alone, not to mention hard drives and whatever else. I spent a few thousand on my gaming rig and it's only 2 and a half years old and it's almost time to replace it. I think for blue ray dvd, a 60 gig hard drive, internal wifi and either net capabilities, let alone the HD at 1080i it is worth at least $600 bucks, rumors were swirling about a $700 price for a loaded ps3. I think for what the ps3 does better than the xbox 360 the price is warrented. That's my rant on console gaming and the relentless blasting the ps3 price point has been getting since E3, lets just be glad it's gonna be released before 2007.

I have ps1 and ps2 but will prob have to wait awhile for ps3. I think the price is ok, a little high but if it is solid with no problems I think it will be ok.

I have no budget for a HDTV so ps3 or xbox 360 I think would be a waste on my old ass tube TV, I'm still finishing gt4 on ps2

I'll end up getting a PS3 but I'll probably wait until a revision and price drop first.

I'll probably get a Wii as well. Nintendo has fun games. The Legend of Zelda FTW!

I was working at an Electronics Boutique when the PS2 came out. The PS2 had a host of problems. Some problems were user-error but most were factory flaws. I mean, even Ender's PS2 got ganked and he's probably the most careful tech-geek I know - so I know it wasn't user-error on that one. Some were wide-spread and common, some were rather rare, but it took a few months for Sony to work out these issues. They released a couple waves of system changes and a small recall on some units.

If you're serious about the PS3, I would highly suggest waiting at least a month to see if there are any launch problems.

I can't wait for the PS3 -- I'll be buying a PS2 in November. :)

Padre is right about my experience with the PS2. I got one right out of the gate and it was a borked unit. Got another one and it's the exact same one I still play to this day (no overheating problems and nothing has ever broken in it).

I'm thinking about a PS3 at some point, but I still want to wait and see what kinds of games come out for it down the road (i.e. second generation games). I partially agree with KDawg about the price point: I paid way more than 700 bucks to get this rig up and running. I say "partially" though because it's just tough for me to justify the expense on a toy nowadays.

But, if the masses don't buy it and the games don't flow, then I'll probably skip out altogether and stick to the PC.

I passed on the 360 mainly because I wanted the PS3. I have several games for PS2 that I dont want to part with and I dont like the idea of adding yet another component to my home theatre cabinet. I will wait until the unit is redily available and the bugs have been worked out but will pay whatever the price to get it. GT4 is like one of the best games every IMO so I just cant wait to see what they do with the PS3 and the GT series.

Exactly, I think microsoft really blew their chance with the technology that they have to put out such a whimpy system. In my opinion it's a xbox with hd capabilities is all, pgr3 and ghost recon are the only games that interest me and that dosen't warrent me spending 400 for that system. PS3 is going to have all my favoriate franchises and I am really looking forward to all the things they say it can do. I respect the microsoft products for what they are but I'll stick with sony.

The bad thing is that Sony will be taking a bath on each PS3 sold for a while. From what I read a couple months ago it is costing Sony almost $1000 per unit to make.
