Helmet, no helmet - whatever. Riding without one is just foolish, regardless of the laws in your city/state.

Was it a violation of his NFL contract to be riding a motorcycle?

Padre I have heard of restrictions on an Athletes contract. Like no pick up b-ball games, no sky diving. Basically things that might get you hurt and leave the guy that just gave you millions of dollars with nothing. I would guess it is more common in the pro sports where you are guaranteed the money. I am not sure which they are. But I think in football they are not guaranteed the money. Only the sighing bonus. That's why guys in the NFL want and get BIG signing bonuses.

all the money he made MAY cover his medical bills from now on. No chance that any insurance he had would cover expenses arising out of a motorcycle accident where he was not wearing a helmet.

Pretty big price to pay for not wanting to mess up your hair and have everyone see who you are when riding.

I have no sympathy for him. He had "the dream" and flushed it because of stupidity.

Tommy Boy. It's just a broken jaw and nose. I don't think we have seen the last of him on a football field.

You guys act like riding a motorcycle without a helmet is like putting a gun to your head. Pleease. Give me a break. Sure, shit happens but you stand the chance of that every time you walk out your front door.

exactly SHIT HAPPENS... he was riding his bike like he has for the last 2+ years (with no incident) and a 62yo woman made shit happen yesterday.
I'm not trying to say you can prevent everything. And i'm not saying having a helmet on would stoped this accident.
I'm just thinking theres a possibility that if he would of been properly dressed the curb or car might of NOT broken his nose or jaw.

get busy livin'?
Sounds nice, but if you don't want to end up on some Darwin list, Jay Leno monolauge, or some pathetic statistic you should do the best within you abilites to prepare yourself. He's a millionare.... i'm sure he could of bough the most expensive advanced helmet in the world that gives him the feeling that he want's with the safety he should have.

Well a local station checked with the RMV and big ben's motorcycle permit expired in March. So technically he should have never been on the bike in the first place.

Not that that has much bearing on the situation in my eyes, it was an accident, and i hope he has a fast recovery (even though I'm in New England and a lifelong Pats fan, I like Ben and wish him all the best). Just wanted to add the expired permit info for the record.
