Preparing for school

I can safely say I hated high school. I don't even miss the people I went with. Almost all my friends were 2 years younger than me. The few that weren't were either gone (graduated before me) or had other friends that they hung out with.
I hated history. I hated economics/gov't/civil whatever the hell it was. Chemistry? I never took it. I fulfilled my science requirements without taking it and concentrated only on art (I had 4 art classes my senior year). English - well let me tell you this little tale:
I was placed in one English class where the teacher wanted us to read about 8 books (incl. Romeo & Juliet), participate in reading aloud in class together, and keep a notebook with three sections (incl. a "journal" section where we were supposed to talk about our lives). We were to hand the notebook in every week (I think) so that she could read our journals. I wasn't in the class for more than 5 minutes (she had just finished up talking about this "awesome" journal concept) when I got up, packed my crap back into my bag and started to leave. "Where do you think you're going?" she snapped at me. "Out of this class!" I snapped back. I went to my guidence counsellor and immediately switched to another class.
I also sucked in math - My greatest 'low' point being a 16 for a quarter. I almost never did any homework (for any class), and frankly I'm surprised I graduated as high on the list as I did. I was 80 out of 480.

Syribo, you said Regents... you must be in NY state, eh?
Yup

I managed to take a bunch of art classes and still get my Regents Diploma regardless of failing Chemistry. NY owns!

It's been agreed the whole world stinks so no ones taking showers anymore.

Yeah it kind of stinks to see how people were unsuccesful in high school for there reasons...the stuff you talked about having to do in your english class do seem to be in depth but for me I would have probably enjoyed doing that kind of stuff...I like writing, it comes pretty easily for me...thats why I'm going to take the honors course this next year(hopefully it goes well

Thats funny you say you were ranked 80 out of 380....me myself in my souphmore year am ranked 94 of 545 considering in 2 years the 545 will probably shrink also...but I'v been told my class is really smart compared to other schools...because I have a 3.5GPA and there is 93 other people that have higher grades lol...doesnt that sound right then?

High School was ok, met the wife there so I guess that was good. But i was kind of bored with it sometimes. If I was interested in the subject (math, writing) I was into it, but if the subject bored me (physics, history) I could not stand it.

I took a few years off before deciding to go back to any sort of school, and in that time I changed to accept a lot of what they tried to cram in my head. I hated English & History in high school, but I found things that sparked my interest so I came to like it. I really like a lot of it now - except poetry. I'm not a fan of that.
If you need assistance in the field of art I can at least try to help. I've been studying art off and on for the better part of 25 years. I took high school level classes when I was just a kid (under 10), took college level courses in early high school, and went to college for it.

Well I found the list of books I am required to read...Which ones would you guyes suggest are good or worth reading?
I had a full schedule 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. Finally next year in 12th grade i'll actually have a study hall period and a lunch period. It will be very nice to have.Originally posted by Stl Lunatic
Yah my schedule is going to be kind of tough but, it will help me alot for college to have extra credits in my math and science...I think I remember balancing equations from 9th grade phisical science...I also remember it was kind of tough for me...I'm gonna look that up and see what its like, refresh my memory and all...
Yah im decent at balancing the equations, but im sure they become much more complicated than the ones I did...I can do the ones with the perentheses and stuff where theres alot of subscripts...![]()

Huckleberry Finn was a good choice, Steinbeck's 'Of mice and men' is pretty straightforward without being too boring --actually you can say that about most of Steinbeck. The Hemingway stuff always wound up boring the crap out of me.
I assume you read 'Lord of the Flies' at some point earlier, but that's one of the all time best.
Fahrenheit 451 is a pretty good and pretty easy read IMHO.
Hated 'The Great Gatsby'
Slaughterhouse 5 was good, but trippy. Lot's of flashing back, forward (sideways??).
Of all of them the easiest, most straightforward is the Steinbeck. Old Man and the Sea is right up there, but it's just too damn slow.
Catcher in the Rye is good, but it's a little more complicated.
