I heard about this yesterday.

From what I've been told AOL gives their employees a bonus for "saving" an account from cancellation, which in turn gives them free reign to act like total dickholes.

I also heard horror stories about people trying to cancel accounts. They made one person send them a death certificate to prove that the account holder was no longer able to use their service. Talk about shitty.

I know my wife had a hell of a time cutting off some stupid free trial that we never activated. We got put on the list from CompUSA, running some promo where you save $20 off your purchase. It took her the better part of a day fighting with them to cancel the account - and she kept repeating that we didn't need it, we only signed up for the discount, and that they assured us we could cancel at any time with no questions asked.

After that ordeal we lodged a long, detailed, formal complaint with CompUSA, AOL and the NYS Attorney General.

This reminds me about a research paper my wife worked on. One of the computer companies used to have a policy where tech support agents got paid for keeping tech calls short. They instituted a policy that stated any software you install that did not come with the machine violated your user agreement and was not covered by their tech support, thus they would not work with you to correct the problem. They'd go through a series of questions, one of them being about installing 3rd party software. Most calls ended in less than 5 minutes because Tech support would hang up on people.

I had a friend that was a customer retention specialist for AOL. He got a commision based on getting someone to stay with AOL.

The better of a deal he cut them, the lower his comission was.

Working in a call centre sucks.... especially since wages are so affected by cancellations. In overall quality scores on this rep's call, he'll probably lose income from cancellations once they're added up for the month.

I feel sorry for both parties in that situation....it sucks on the giving and recieving.

My best friend signed up for some ungodly reason and he argued with the fuck for 45 minutes and they were still offereing him new services even after he told them he wanted to cancel the old services. You have to get beligerent. I'm not saying to threaten them, but you at least need to tell them to shut the fuck up. And I do like BTT's no pay attitude.
