The Skills of a Panzer (by Frog)

Postby NightKiller » Wed Apr 09, 2003 10:58 pm

Because I have heared too many times that it doesn't require any skill to be a good panzer, I wrote this article.

It is true that any player can make multikills, but a good panzer does that all the time. And a good panzer does more then just splutting enemies. By taking the flag back, he keeps disorganising the offence or defence of the opponent. Also, if he makes a lot a kills, he makes it easier for his teammates to kill the enemies, because they will keep more distance between eachother to prevent mass-panzer-slauthering.

These are the most important skills a panzer should control to be the most useful for his team:

Know where to shoot

Never shoot on the player himself: always against fixed objects like walls, ceilings, floors, trees, boxes, fences etc.
Always shoot on the spot that will kill/gib the most enemies. Often it is better to gib 2 then kill 3.

Example: beach/axis: There is 1 allie in the trenches and 1 on the grass. You shoot on the net on top of the trenches so they will both die.

Aim/Reaction

Yep, aim, that's right. If you have an MP40 it doesn't matter when you miss a couple of bullets, but when you miss with a panzer, you will be pretty useless to your team for the following 20 seconds. Besides, missing a panzer is often THE moment for the team on offence to do a mass-attack, like on base on the northeast-tower.
If you are getting shot at while shooting a panzer, you need aim for sure to get the panzer on the spot you intended to, defenitely when you are hit by a sniper.

Example: beach/axis: Allies got the docs, you and some teammates are on top of the radiostairs. Allies are coming up the stairs. On the moment you press your mousebutton, an allie shoots at you and you fall back of the railing. Because of this you shoot on the floor and splut yourself and 3 teammates. gg! :D

Patience

Often it is better not to shoot if you only see 1 enemy. Most times there will follow more who are not keeping a lot of distance between eachother, because they don't expect there will be a panzer after the first one came by.

Example: village/axis: Allies have stolen the gold, you are in the southtower, your whole team is dead. 3 allies run close together past the tower. You don't shoot! 5 seconds later the you see the allie with the gold and vaporize him, jump down and return the gold.

Stealth

Until you decide to shoot, it's best the enemies have no idea where you are.
While your panzer is recharging, you are very vulnerable, so you have to move without the enemy spotting you.

Example: base/allies: Without any of the axis noticing, you sneak to the house on the left of the axis spawn, so you can spawnkill.

Know where the others of your team are

It's a waste of your panzer to shoot at only 1 enemy. When you know where your teammates are and know that one of them will be able to shoot that single enemy down, you can decide to let him go.

Example: beach/axis: You are in the radioroom and see an allie on upperbase walking to the backstairs. When you know there one of your teammates is in the basement, you don't shoot. If there isn't, you do.

Mind your own spawntime:

When you shoot your first panzer 20+ seconds before your own spawn, you can do /kill right after shooting your second. This way you are able to shoot 2 panzers every 30 seconds instead of every 40 (on maps with 30 secs spawntime).
Often it's the panzer's job to get the flag back. You should know how long it takes to get to the flag from your position. If you start on the right time, you will never get a long spawn if you get shot while getting the flag.

Example: beach/axis: 7 seconds before your own spawn you jump down from upper base to get the flag. When you enter the forward bunker the allies spawn. You get shot and spawn right away and spawnkill the allies.

Mind the enemy's spawntime

Ofcourse you have to know their spawntime to be able to spawnkill.
Also it is important, so you won't shoot the enemy a couple of seconds before their spawn and they will respawn again right away. You have to be so smart to wait a couple of seconds then.

Example: base/allies: You know the axis spawn at 14/44. You are hiding in the tunnel, the time is 5:50 and there are 2 axis standing on the bridge. You wait till it's 5:43 and then shoot (on the fence ofcourse), so they will miss their spawn and there will only be 4 axis left during the next 30 seconds.

Look what classes the enemies you can shoot are:

Often it is the best to shoot the medics, sometimes the engi or panzer. Lieutenants are the least panzerfragworthy (nice word huh?) in my opinion.

Example: assault/allies: There are 4 (2 meds, 1 lt, 1 engi) axis at the towers. You could easily kill a medic and a lieutenant, but you decide to only shoot on the engineer. He is gibbed and has to respawn and come all the way to the tower again. This will give the rest of your team enough time to retake the tower.

----

All these factors are part of the decision, which mostly you have to make in less than a second, whether and where you shoot. And this is not as easy as a lot of players seem to think.
To master these points or not, will make the difference between a panzer who got multikills once in a while, but also dies alot and gets long spawntimes, and a panzer who gets multikills again and again, gets the flag back time after time, /kills, spawnkills, kills, takes flag back, /kills, spawnkills...etc...so a panzer who drives the opponent crazy :D

So now you now how to become a good panzer and why panzers do require skill.

Next week, lesson 2: What to do against those good laming panzers? :P

I liked when the panzer had a arch to it. It made it so you need a little skill to shoot across the map.

speaking of which, when it had that arch to it, I figured out the angle to clear out the radio room from just a ways out of the forward bunker, I won a game (or atleast really helped) for making this shot.
