HBO is cancelling Rome

Postby cavalierlwt » Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:17 pm

We will still get the 2nd Season, but no more Rome after that. :(

Less and less to watch on TV, I may start playing BF2 again, right in time for them to switch to BF2142

Good. That show was a criminal waste of money. Consider that each episode cost twice as much as Donnie Darko and imagine what better stuff they could have made with the money. It was a crippling dissappointment to me as I had high hopes...

I think it was good, a great show. HBO are the company that make it arent they, not a channel that broadcasts it?

You'll smoke a turd in Purgatory for that one Parrot! ;)

American TV is shifting away from Deadwood/Rome etc and toward American Idol, Dance with the Stars and other shit like that. Reality TV, gossip TV, makes me want to get up in a belltower with a high powered rifle.

My sisters watch that shit and talk about the people like they know them and give a shit about them. Oooh, so and so's hair looked great tonight, ooh, I hope so and so doesn't get cut tonight, blah blah blah.

How bad are things that one hit show breeds like 3 or 4 concurrent spinoffs? CSI, CSI-Miami, CSI-New York etc.
How many fucking CSIs can people watch?? Gee, what's gonna happen? I don't know, maybe the cops will solve the crime by using high tech methods of collecting and investigating tiny bits of crime scene evidence??? Hey wait, I think that was the plot of last's week's show, and the one before that, etc, etc, etc.

Well.. Rome was an OK show, not great.. just ok. I watched all the episodes but didn't feel that it had greatness in it. Deadwood on the other hand is a GREAT show. I think the last episode was probably one of the best yet. Now that is a show I'll sorely miss. That is for me, the best show on tv. Period.

It's the nature of the business...it goes through cycles. Right now, we're in the police procedural cycle, what with the Law and Order and CSI families on the air. Three hours of various flavors of CSI per week, three to four more (depending on how Dick Wolf is doing at a particular moment) of Law and Order flavors and you have six hours out of 21 hours of prime-time on the three major networks filled up.

Then you've got the various talent competitions, which tend to run heavily during the summer - they are cheap to produce and the number of people willing to humiliate themselves is apparently never-ending, so they will continue. Remember a few years back when the big rage was game shows? Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, 21, The Weakest Link, et al? When a show demonstrates success a la The Real World (the parent of Survivor) or American Idol, every other network will try to cash in on the craze.

TV is, at its heart, an advertising delivery medium. If people watch it, they will produce more of it.

For the money they spent on it Rome was extremely poor. If it had been made for a zena style budget then I might have been impressed but they spent nearly 9 million per episode. That just fucking ridiculous especially when you look at the poorly lit, poorly scripted, action free result. Those are some expensive bedsheets they had wrapped round them.

It's not that it was necessarily bad it's just that it very definately wasn't worth the money they spent on it. I mean ffs they could get a whole series of the simpsons for almost what they spent on 1 episode of it.

My current favourite show is 'Without a Trace'. The casting on that show is fantastic. I'm still waiting to get the cash to buy the last 4 seasons of the West Wing as I am so far nehind the ones on the tv it's not even funny. I wish they hadn't cancelled 'Firefly' as well. That could have been unmissable tv for me.

Personally I think american tv is good. It's certainly better than your film industry anyway.

Disliking Rome doesn't make me a reality tv fan. The only reality tv show I would watch would be if they actually made Battle Royale and dumped those fucktards on an island somewhere and let them kill each other. Then they could bring the survivor back and run a lottery for which audience member got the honour of beating the last one to death with their weapong of choice. Then after we could get the program commissioners who approved american idol and garote them with their own intestines while using despairing letters of complaint from all the good shows that got cancelled too early to give them paper cuts on their eyeballs. That would be entertaining tv...

They call it a medium because it's neither rare nor well-done.

Figures, everything seems to be being canceled by HBO unless it is Sopranos.

The Wire season 4 starts soon. Still by far and away the best show on HBO. Which means the show will be canceled.

Just watched seasons 1 and 2 of Entourage, good show(wasn't interested at first).

Just watch all 5 seasons of Six Feet Under. Fucking great show. You gotta be a robot not to cry to the least few episodes. It's like watching Terms of Endearment, but with onions being cut all around you. Your fucked. Watch it by yourself so you do not look like a pussy.

Just a major shift in attitude at HBO. It went from 'Wow, look at what we can achieve on television' to 'Holy shit, look at the profit margins on America Idol'
