I've got a Nikon D100 and a D200. The important thing to remember if you're considering a D-SLR is that it's not just the body you have to worry about - it's quality glass to go with it. And the quality glass can easily double or triple the total price you're paying. Otherwise, you might as well just get a 5-6 MP point and shoot camera.

I have some experience with Canons..I have the powershot G6 and am about to buy the SD600. Let me know if you have any problems
I also have shot with (but don't own) some Canon DSLR's too...damn those are nice.

I like the newer Lumix Panasonic cameras.
They're a joint effort between Leica and Panasonic. It's Leica's lenses in the Panasonic cameras, which makes for a pretty wicked combo. Relatively affordable. I bought an older model, the DMC-LZ2 for $150.

Not a bad camera at all. Takes great pics.. good price.
Wal-Mart has the TZ1 for I think $300, 10x optical zoom, 5mp. Not bad at all.
Sure, D-SLR's are great, but for the "rest of us," these cameras seem to be pretty awesome.

I am a little late on this thread but wanted to say that I have the Canon Powershot SD200. It's 3.2 megapix. I've had it about a year and a half and love it. Yes, it's a previous model and they don't make the 200 anymore but it works great for me and takes great pics and video clips. I also love the canon software that came with the camera. (Photoimpression to fix pics).

thanks to Spirit of Me for the sig!

I am looking for a nice slr digital, but will prolly wait another year to get it... I saw one that came with a 50-150mm lens at circuit city for $800, looked nice.
Now that I look at their site, I can't find it, it was 6 or 7mp digital SLR...
