I agree with Buli.. Conroe aka Core 2 Duo is the way to go. Still it depends on your budget, now that AMD has slashed prices.

Like I said earlier.. you can't loose with either company.

Ya gotta love it!:D :D :D

Thanks Sonar and Buli! This is fun!

I looked at the Dell monitor you mentioned. I have a 19" Viewsonic monitor that I've had for like 7 years. Its great but time to clear off some deskspace and go flatscreen. Not sure about wide vs full. Have to think about that.

I have a hunch that this computer thing is going to be my fall/winter fun project. :D (combined with setting up the old PC in the arcade and configuring for MAME and setting up another pc for spinscan in the workout room)

I'm pretty much going to make this a full on gaming rig. I was thinking both HTPC and games based on location but I changed my mind based on current usage of my PC for primarily games. I've wanted to mod a box for awhile and may end up doing that as part of this build.

I've toyed with the idea of modding a case, but who has the time? There's always something to do around the house, not to mention new games coming out all the time.

I really like your MAME cabinet. I would love to make one for my sons. I have several old computers that would be ideal for the task. I have a SFF, P4 2.53 Ghz that I currently use for playing music. It's mainly a kids PC these days, and my wife uses it for email, etc. I've thought about turning it into a HTPC, but it's just too noisy.... Still I could see that SFF fitting easily into a MAME Cabinet. (ah... it's nice to dream) :P

I'm running out of places to put computers in my house. Time for a bigger house, I guess. hehe.

I imagine my next computer project will be putting a new computer together and then some overclocking. I've never spent the time trying to OC, I usually just buy a higher powered CPU and leave it at that. Time is money and I have more money than time these days. Still the bargain hunter in me wants to save a few bucks... We'll see what happens this time. Either I go with the E6700 or the E6400 and OC it.

Well if you ever want plans for the MAME cab let me know. The other thing I've been telling my wife I want to do is add a slikstik to the MAME cab. I hate not having a trackball. I'd build the controller myself but like you said, who has the time?

The nice thing about the cab when I did it was that I had just bought a house that had a large finished basement. I had some old computers lying around a figured what the heck? It would be a great project for kids as its pretty simple woodworking and painting and the rest is just configuring MAME. If you have an old 27" TV lying around you're all set.
