In some ways, they are in a pinch, long term. There is only so much the average household will pay for Internet service, regardless of the speed. Let's say the number is $60 per month. It doesn't matter if they start offering us 20MBit dl speed, most people aren't going to pay $100 per month. So, at some point things either stagnate, or they find new streams of revenue that don't come directly from the consumer. Now they're looking to make some money from content providers, kind of like the payola scams from the 50s --radio stations took bribes to play new music, you either paid them or your artist had no hope of getting a wide audience.
Imagine the international implications of this. The rest of the world is already getting pretty pissed about America's control of the supposed 'world wide web'. Imagine if European companies now have to pay to be seen in the US, and vice versa. That's all we need, increased isolation and alienation from Europe.

What makes matters worse is that the cable and the telecommunications companies are marketing their view as, something along the lines of "hands off the internet" which sounds contrary to their intentions. If you weren't in the know you'd think they were trying to protect the internet as it is. In reality it means they don't want a law passed that prevents them from implementing their tiered structure.
The tiered structure will kill off all sites that are not well funded. You will see many more subscription based sites pop up. After all, if these sites are going to pay more then they're going to want to make that money up somehow.

Yeah, they found a pretty deceitful approach. They were even smart enough to put out web sites that were in the .org domain as opposed to the .com domain, plus they use amateurish looking flash content to make it look like a 'homemade' grassroots campaign.

Hell you boys already have a multi tiered system for politics (pay more get listened to more) trust you to come up with one for the internet as well.
They'll get their way in the end because whoever the next president is going to be needs their money to get elected. By the time the majority of the people realise they have just been screwed with their pants on his 2 terms will be up. This is the way things go when you make it necessary for politicians to sell themselves to the highest bidder in order to get elected...
