My PC craped out. :(

Postby [ecgn] btt » Mon Sep 11, 2006 3:37 pm

Well as some of you know I had a breif power surge last Tuesday. (interupting my BF2 1.4 patch download) Since then my PC had had some trouble turning on. Had to press to on button a few times sometimes to get it to turn on. Well this morning it didn't come on at all. I am posting from a backup piece of shit. So no BF2 for me for a bit. Not gaming at all.. I still have this POS and will keep you guys posted. I have contacted my power company and they have started a claim. I am waiting for someone to contact me about it. I hope they replace the PC. I am not holding my breath. Maybe they will pay for a new power supply. I hope that is the only problem. It ran fine when I got it going. SIGHHHHHHHHHH.

This happened to my buddy on Saturday nite. He had a power surge sometime during the night and the next morning his computer was dead no post. nothing. I told him to unhook the power to the power supply and let it rest awhile. About 3 hours later he plugged it back in and computer powered up. My best guess is that most power supplys have a zener diode to help protect against faults. So when there is a power surge the voltage stays charged up in the power supply when the AC still plugged in. By unhooking the AC this gives time for the extra charge in the power supply to disipate. You might want to give this a try.

that sucks tony. I will agree that the power company prolly won't do diddly about your comp. Most likely response is that they will say its an uncontrollable incident and therefore they are not at fault. They may also point you in the direction of buying a rated surge protector. My comp is plugged into a $30 surge protector with a product guarentee of $30,000 maximum. I imagine your power company will suggest some similar product to prevent something like this in the future, but at the days end they will basically prolly tell you tough cookie, and send you on your way.

I would suggest trying what Pafmei has suggested, I would try anything before having to make claims and then buying new stuff.

Best of luck to ya man, hope you get it sorted out soon. Snipers will be safe from your shotgun on the infantry only mode on the city server until you are back up and running.

My computer is down, too.

Ordering a new X2, motherboard and 7900 GS X2 sometime next month.

Mine won't post anymore, not even a signle beep. Powers on, nothing happens after that. Think my P4 finally bit the dust with the 900 Mhz overclock.

It is pluged into a surge protector. With a $10,000 replacement guarentee. They are next to be called.

added- Well I got it turned on. I am posting from it now. I wonder if I just leave it on it will be ok. :D I looked down and some lights were on and it was making a noise like it wanted to turn on. So I pushed the button and it came on. Now I don't wanna trun it off.

Well I hate to hear what happened. I would be surprised if either of them pay. The power company typically will not pay for electronics due to a surge unless you can prove 100% that the surge caused it. Even then they are fairly tight fisted.

I am almost 100% sure the surge protector people will not pay as they are protecting against spikes and not brown outs. I had a $1,000 DVD player get hit by lightning a few years ago and they asked me to send in my surge protector with my claim. They ended up not paying the claim due to the fact that the surge protector was not damaged in any way. I lost several other items at the same time in other parts of the house on different systems and ended up making a claim against my home owners insurance.

Good Luck!

If it messes up again try taking the power supply from your old POS and seeing if it turns on the gaming machine. That would at least tell you it is a power supply problem.

I feel for you tony, you might want to barrow a friends power supply tester, or maybe consider buying one, they can save you some $$ if it isn't your ps. It's a shame the other teams on city maps and POE will not have you to counteract my offensive, sadly for them I will reap all the benefits. . . that is if I wasn't so busy with school and my Monday night class :freak: check my Ipod post if you want advice on ps's

Well I unplugged the power cord from the back of the tower for a bit. It started right up after I did this. Maybe I am not to bad off after all. I still might look into a new power supply and a UPS.

I highly recomend and UPS. I have my computer, router / modem and monitor on one. I also have 3 in my home theatre for all of my AV components / TV. Now when the power goes off I dont lose anything and the generator kicks on before the batteries run down. It is kinda nice as we have storms like crazy down here in Alabama. When the lights go off I dont even stop playing or watching.

My power company sucks (LIPA), I get all kinds of crap, all the time. I lost a PC a couple of years ago to a nasty drop/surge, and after that,I put a UPS on each puter. I haven't had a single failure since. I wish my power company could say the same.
