Verizon / Verizon Employees

Postby Rand0m » Thu Jan 25, 2007 12:10 pm

I need some help with an issue I had with Verizon yesturday. I applied for a Service Splice Technician position last November. I went into Boston and took all their tests and passed. After the tests I gave them my application.

At the time of applying the job description did not have an age requirement. I have waited about two months now for a word back from them. Yesturday evening I received a call from one of their staffing assoaciates. She pretty much told me I had the job pending a drug test/ background check. She even told me that after she got my results she would call me to let me know I can put my two weeks notice in at my current job.

So, at that point I was pumped. I had the job. Not even 5 minutes later she calls me back to ask if I am 21. I told her no, she then said the position is only 21+ and could not offer me the job. I was in shock at that point. I then made some calls and finally got a number to the New England Staffing Manager. She pretty much told me I was wrong. She said there was a point on the online application that asked if I was 21 or older. Even if I answered wrong on this the people in Boston who allowed me to test and pass my application in should've picked up on this. The staffing associate who called me and gave me a job should've seen this. They fucked me over royally.

I am thinking this is a new rule for 2007 because I went back to the Verizon site and found the job I applied for. No where on there does it have an age requirement.

My questions are; What are the next steps I should take in handling this? If it was 18 or older in 2006 shouldnt the company grandfather me in since I went through their entire hiring process in 2006? Any thoughts?

It's most likey for one of two things:

1) Verizon's Workers Comp Insurance
2) Their Union Contract.

Either way, you are screwed.

That's messed up.
The only reason I could think of would be if you had to drive one of their trucks. Maybe there is an issue with insurance?

Especially drivers who drive larger trucks, my company has the "law" all employees that drives the companies trucks have to be 21, its more of a DOT thing then anything (Dept of Transportation) there would be at least in my state, no chance to ever grandfather you in

each state varies in the rules, in Boston it must have been 18, my state is just 21, and the same way for verizon here

Your next step is lick your wounds and apply again when you hit 21

I feel your pain bro, i remember the old days trying to land that great job, and age holding me back

I give you props Random, keep your head up, go work at Sams Club or whatever for 18 months and then go back and kick that job's ass that you wanted.

Dont let that stand in your way, wait til you hit 21 and then go get it, you got your whole life in front of you, be patient....

If it weren't for the labor movement, you would not have the following:

an 8 hour work day
overtime
OSHA
EEOC
social security
child labor laws
paid holidays and sick days
paid vacations
workers compensation
disability
pensions
employee medical plans
maternity leave
the right to organize to get better wages and benefits
etc

I am not going to try again when I am 21. The only reason I would've taken the job now is because it would've been beneficial to me starting now, not at 21. It takes 3 years to get to 60k in that position. If I start at 21 I will be 24 before I start making decent money.

I am in school at the moment so I would rather finish and go a different route. I want to do something in engineering. I am looking at either aerospace/aeronautical or electrical, but I am not sure which one will have a better job market when I graduate.
