NHL to go with bigger nets?

What?? I know they want to increase scoring but I think they have it perfect right now. The changes they made at the beginning of this season were perfect for the league. I don't think they need anymore.

yeah they are going in the wrong direction. More goals does not equal a better game. I believe the All-star game proved that. It was realitively boring and not too much happened, but they got a lot of goals.

I prefer the games with awesome saves, low scoring, great team working, with that nail biting ending hoping your team can hold that 1 goal lead with 5 minutes left.

Yea not a good idea. And making the post angled so that post shots have a better chance of going in. I say boo that, the ping of a post shot is a great sound and always gets a crowds attention.

The NHL just needs more air time. Hell ESPN shows more about high school sports the they cover the NHL.

it doesn't matter the size of the nets, the Senators will fill them!! lol

I think that the new rules, with a few tweaks, are pretty good as it is and no larger nets are needed...do you Americans really need larger nets to watch hockey? I already think that it is too fast for most of you....

Not this American. Hockey has been awesome.... my Blues have been the shit recently, which makes going to the games more tolerable than earlier when they were shit. Gotta love Andy Murray.

booo to the larger nets. that is ridiculous. christ, the game is so emotionless right now. bring back big hits and fighting. responsibility and retribution.
i like the game as it is now... except too many penaties when there is body contact. love the waiving of the 2 line rule.

I agree, the excitement like it used to be in the 80's is gone, barely anymore huge bench clearing brawls, the penguins and the flyers in the 80's was crazy, now touching someone gets you tossed, I'm glad to see there might be some changes, who wants to watch a 1-0 game, I love fast goals, and high scoring games, now if they can only get rid of the damn refs, that would be awesome

The biggest problem is not the size of the nets, the size of the frikin goalies. They look like Michelin Men buried in their garb. You see these freaks's little heads poking out of a sea of padding and you can see why no-one can score.

I look back at pictures of Billy Smith from the early '80s and it looks like he's got a baseball glove and two pillows strapped to his legs. Today's NHL goalies look almost as ridiculous as indoor Lacrosse goalies.

ZOG they did shrink the goalies stuff from last year. I don't think it was much but the pads are smaller now.

Hockey Ratings are terrible on TV this year, and so is overalll attendance. They need to do something...

dunno about the other teams, but the habs have sold out every game for the past two seasons. As long as there is a hope of winning the fans will be there.

The main problem for other cities is they need to reach out to the fans and show them why hockey is good (or at least spark an intrest). It is a product, but they are not really marketing it well. Though it's probably harder in the states to do this then in canada, we're pretty much born to like hockey.

I have to say the city/team rivalries also help. Nothing like a Boston/Habs game, or a TO/habs one. The atmosphere is always incredible and once people get a taste of it they usually get hooked on hockey. I've gotten a lot of non-hockey fans to enjoy hockey by bringing to a game or two.

I don't doub the TV ratings because in the US you can only look to local team coverage and Versus which some people don't have or wont look for.

As far as attendance levels go...

The game is a great game, doesn't necessarily translate well to the TV but in person, its the best game to watch in person.

Bigger nets wont do anything except make scoring records be broken and goaltending records impossible to break.

I think the beginning of the end was way back when Reggie Lemelin introduced these light-weight pads. The biggest deterrent to pad size "back in the day' was the sheer weight of the leather pads. Once the light-weight materials were introduced, the size of all the pads increased, until we have what we have now...frikin skating laundry hampers with goalie masks.

When I played hockey it was tough getting someone to play goal, and who can blame them? I wasn't too keen on standing in front of people shooting things at me, even with pads. To make up for the lack of goalies we'd erect a sort of Franken-goalie using barrels and sticks and drape pads and gloves on the pile hoping it would resemble a goalie. But it just wasn't the same. Half the fun of shooting on a real goalie was faking him out, drawing him down, or wide and sliding the puck\ball under him. There's absolutely no fun shooting at a target with a few open spots.

This is exactly what the NHL is today; lumbering, net-sized goalies blocking shots by simply being in the way. People may argue that players skate faster and shoot harder, but defense is much more proficient, too. Nobody has the time to take a good shot at the net anymore.

Increasing the net size won't amount to anything.

And in my opinion players are just too big now-a-days. They might be able to skate well, but they're so big they can't change direction fast enough. And they all use those 6' sticks, where it's impossible to pass the puck by their skates.

Drop it to 4 non-goalies per side, reduce the padding the freaks in net wear and let the real fun begin.
