From what I'v heard they knew that these squid existed since they had caught and found them dead. The only thing is scientists have never been able to find them to be studyed in their natural environment. Theres many legends that speak of squid that attacked ships and whatnot with huge eyes. People always thought they were only folklore....not its possible...
