This is so terrible. What could cause a person to do these things? Its illogical, immoral, and just sadistic. I'm a junior in high school and this makes me wonder and question my safety at school. But, if you think about it there is no way to fully prevent things like this without jepordizing the freedom and learning environment that schools offer. I just hope nobody goes off and trys to do a Viginia tech. copy cat.

Already this year at my school we had several shooting threats written on restroom stalls with connections to collumbine. One said something along the lines "it will be worse than columbine..etc."

Idiots might see this absurde accident as the last straw or the breaking point in their insanity.

MSNBC is having a special about Hollywood and violence with some snot-nosed woman saying how movies and games condition us for violence and other bull-shit. Naturally for the video games they're playing clips of Halo and GTA.

Sure didn't take the media long to blame the entertainment industry. God damn the media are such blood sucking leaches, just like they were after Columbine. Anyway I know people at VT and I hope they're ok.

Typical balming the entertainment industry, funnily enough this was a guy who went pycho because he thought his girlfriend was cheating on him. Nothing to do with Computer games or films. Its the resposiblity of parent to stop their children playing these games and watching these films if they dont wat their kids watching it, and adults should be old enough to know better

What really needs to be banned in America is guns, if he didnthave a gun, this would have never happened, and this wasnt stopped by someone else shooting the killer, he shot himself, so guns did nothing to stop it either.

I saw part of a news conference, hard to blame the cops, they want to live as much as anyone else even though their jobs say to run in there. How are you supposed to prepare for something like this? I dont think Va Tech is in the middle of a ghetto where there are shootings every night.

As much training as a couple cop friends of mine go through, how can anything short of war experience train you for an incident like that? I mean it set a record for a single gunman right? I can't see how you can possibly plan for a scenario like that.

This whole thing is just terrible, I am sick to my stomach and I dont even know anyone there, just feel for all the families that lost a young family member. Gonna go peek in my kids door one more time before I leave for work and thank my lucky stars..........

The cops were probably obeying their training, which tells them to secure the area and prepare for some sort of standoff. I don't think they're cowards, but I do think their procedures prevent them from being heroes at times. By contrast, firefighters rush right into burning buildings all the time, taking huge chances to save lives. It's a matter of what they're allowed to do.

Yeah, I understand the idea of of 'no guns' but I'm also quite biased too. I have a gun and I hate the thought of having to turn it in. If they're going to go after guns they should at least be reasonable about it, and go after the guns that kill the most people: small, cheap handguns.

Seems like a pretty fair thing to blame it on to me. Sure he could go psyco without but he'd be highly unlikely to kill 30 people. Guns didn't cause him to make the decision he made, but they sure as shit enabled him to kill a lot more people than without them.

Anyway politics aside I feel for the families of those involved. Such a waste

I don't think guns are to blame. Let's not get into a political debate here.

The mood is so dreary here, it cannot be put into words. The media has been licking their lips over this story since it happened. I had a media crew come up to me and demand where the dormitory was and where the shootings took place.

As someone said earlier, its easy to make assumptions sitting from the armchair and comforts of your own home. Just because the media says this is how things are.....doesn't mean its accurate. I cannot begin to imaging how much this incident has scarred our school's national image. Would you want to send your son/daughter here after an event like this?

Classes are canceled for the rest of the week, and I am going back home for the rest of the week. It's too hard to be around all of this. Thanks for the posts everyone.

Sad to say that such an event even happened here but lets face it, this shit happens all over the world in less "civilized" countries and on a more frequent basis.

The media has described this guy as a "loner", its the emotionally dumbing down of our society where people can only express themselves in the form of violence. Any answers you look for here will never facilitate or justify the reasons why this guy did what he did. In situations like these there are a thousand possibilities of what went wrong to make the carnage worse.

Take stock of what you have, where you live. You could be facing days of endless slaughters and being politically repressed all over the world in places like Iraq, China, Russia and wherever.

on the road today lots of talk on the radio about it. No laws are going to stop random acts of violence unless you somehow get everyone except police to turn in their guns which aint gonna happen ever.

So sad hearing some of the stories, I am really curious what was on the note as if anything could justify what he did. He should have just offed himself and been done with it.
