The Price of Gas

Okay Okay, help me out here. Look at the attached PDF and then answer a few questions for me.
I understand basic economics (I think)
I understand supply and demand and I understand that the "gas outs" will not work, you know the ones were you aren't suppose to by buy gas on a particular day.

I've also heard my dad talk about the oil crisis in the seventies and talk about all the gas company mergers then that he says created a monopoly.

This sounds good to me, but I feel like I am missing something...

1. Doesn't most of the gas sold in the US come from Exxon anyway? Even the stations that don't say Exxon?

2. What stations are supplied from companies other than Exxon?

3. If we all really did this, wouldn't the other company just run out of gas and we would be forced to buy from Exxon or the other company would have to buy from Exxon (wholesale) to resell to us, this is assuming that we would use more gas than the other company could refine, therefor supply.

Okay now my question is on economics so try to keep the political discussion and flaming to a minimum

That plan is delusional. Only way to get gas under 2 bucks now besides traveling through time and wishing upon a star is to get the refineries that are "down" back up.

How would we get them back up? Simple, get the president to force them to put a move on the "repairs" and "maitenance" projects that they have going.

Who am i fooling? That won't work either.

My plan is this:

Yup.
Look at the bright side: with those prices, maybe people will reduce their gas usage, which could reduce pollution, which is the real important thing.

Maybe they'll stop driving 10 miles to the Wal-Mart?

I work in a large suburb of Chicago, Schaumburg. I live 7 miles from work and have a commute of 15 mins if I hit like every light.

Almost everyone else has a commute of an hour plus, with the exception of my boss everyone else is an hour away. So many people drive so far just to get to and from work I dont get it.

Over an hour each way I would effin kill myself... we're talking 2.5 hours in the car every damn day just going back and forth to work. I have never looked for a job that wasn't right by my house, I dont know what these people are thinking. That's the killer right there, people driving too far to get to work everyday.

I live 3 miles from work and it takes me 8 minutes if every light just turned red as I got to them.

Well, I do ride my bike, and drive my SUV as little as possible, BUT I will continue to bitch about the price of fuel. Here's why:

Besides my "real" job at the hospital, I also help out with the family (in-law) business. We are a transport / logistics company that spends more money on fuel per week than most families do in a year. When you have a very large FLEET of tractor-trailers on the road 24/7, you become very sensitive to the price of fuel.

So, despite riding my bike and cutting back on my SUV, I'll still bitch about the price of fuel...

But all I have are trees from my house to Wal-mart. Where should I stop that is shorter? I guess I could go ten miles the other way to a supermarket. Fawked both ways. I do drive a 4 cylinder straight drive which keeps the gas consumption down. I never really look at the gas prices because I am not getting a bike and riding 15 to 30 miles (depends where the job is) and at least 500 feet in elevation change. I just stop at the same one all the time and it is furthest from town and closest to my house. They are usually a penny cheaper then the ones in town.


Driving less or adding ten to twenty miles per gallon is not gonna help anything. Populations are growing and there are more drivers on the road every day. Something other then a combustion engine must propel us into the future. I for one think an electric car is the answer. I think it can be done now if they made them (the whole car) more efficient. There is more then just the regenerative braking systems of hybrids that could be done to recharge the batteries. One example would be wind energy. How much would a car produce traveling at 30 mph? I bet more then you think. Another would be copper wire in the tires and magnets in the wheel wells. This sounds crude and simple but I am sure something could be done to make this concept work. That's all for now. Let me hit the bong again and maybe I can reinvent some more stuff.

I have a truck and a car both. I drive the truck when the car is in use, which is most of the time latley. Or when I need it for hauling something. It gets 10 - 12 MPG. The car gets an average of 20 - 25 MPG. The Price of gas is going to keep going up. I don't see anyway around it. Maybe I should switch to Bio Diesel? Problem is with that the cars / trucks are way more expensive. And more money to repair when something goes wrong.

I saw an ad for that midsize suv hybrid didnt look as ugly as that one goofy car, the Prius I think is the ugly one.

Exactly 5 miles to work for me. 13 minute drive if I get stopped at every light. 5 minute drive if I am heading over for a 6am shift and the road is empty.

Took me 26 minutes to get home yesterday though... construction zones are horrible. The traffic was backed up for over a mile. Huge waste of gas...
