Lol @ Symantec

Postby Darknut » Wed Oct 03, 2007 7:48 pm

I uninstalled Symantec Internet Security and installed Avast (Free Version). My processes dropped from 44 to 34, memory usage dropped by 300MB and CPU usuage dropped by about 10%.

Funny thing about Symantec, I had purchased Internet Security 2006 when it first came out and after my subscription was up I reinstalled from the same file—the .exe I downloaded from them—and it then told me that I had 766 days of use left. Lol... awesome.

I switched because their latest update screwed up the drawing of Windows on my PC. The borders would render fine but all the chrome* inside of the windows would be completely white. I still don't see how NIS would be interfering with graphics but at the same time, I've seen even crazier things happen in the world of computing.

*I believe that is the general term for visual elements of the GUI. If not, I mean to say the menus, buttons, work-space backgrounds, scroll-bars, whatnot.

It wasn't the theme or visual style that I was using. The problem was the the windows weren't being displayed properly. They had drawing errors.

Symantec software sucks. Period.

You'd have to hold a gun to my head to get me to install any of their bloatware shit on any of my PCs.

Yeah I love how my daily virus update from them happens at least 3 times a day. I mean how fucking hard can it be to work to a clock...

I was always slightly annoyed by how their application enforced "always show" in the notification area and would auto-repopulate the start menu at it's default location should you move or delete it. I like my GUIs to have the minimal amount of information displayed. I'll dig out the details when I need to. I don't like having tons of things being shown to me all the time.

To clearly illustrate my point I will post my desktop:

Symantec software sucks. Period.

They are determined to highlight the end user's complete and utter stupidity by using half your system resources and making sure you're clicking constant, endless, inane buttons.

I have yet to meet anyone who knows anything about computers who likes and or uses their anti-virus software.

Darknut, I'm disappointed.

Eh, I didn't really hate their software since you can configure it to not bother you the majority of the time. The resource hogging did bother me a bit. However, I wasn't really that trusting of the free alternatives.

I'm the biggest software skeptic on the planet. In my opinion, 95% of all software sucks. It's either over-priced, under-achieving, under-supported or sold as the be-all-end-all-solution to what-ever ails you.

How many effin' times is iTunes going to be updated per week? Is twice a week enough, or is it mindless overkill pushed on the brainless masses to endure? Why doesn't Apple just bust into my house, father my children and drink all my beer?

Useless snake-oil.

That being said; AVG is solid, effective and low on overhead. In my mind you can't ask for much more than that.

I got norton free from my internet provider. To be honest it would be a pain in the ass to uninstal as I'd have to lose a load of other software that relates to my router which they bundled togetherfor shits and giggles. Otherwise yeah I'd go back to AVG as well.

Repeat after me, Sav;

"I am not in control of my own computer."

Repeat seven times a day as you look yourself in the mirror.

They're probably freely distributing his porn collection—that he foolishly payed for—amongst members of their organization. Are you going to sit back and take that? You worked long hours, through holidays and missed birthdays to earn enough money to pay for that one-hundred and four terabytes of meticulously categorized and cataloged pornography. You're just going to sit back and let strangers reap the fruits of your hard labor?
