ps3 hard drive corrupted....

ok so i get a message when i turned on the ps3 today saying the hd is corrupted and will restore itself, unfortunately it doesnt do anything (just loops saying the same thing)

I call sony and they tell me since i dont have proof of purchase (not the original owner) my only option is to pay them 150 bucks plus any taxes and fees and what not to fix it.


I know that i can replace the hard drive (it even says how in the manual) and even though ill lose all my info i can use the ps3 again. The question is this...should i just pay sony to fix it or do you know where i can get a cheap 60-80 gb hd to use? It has to be a serial ATA 2.5 inch hd (pref 5500 rpm). Any help is appreciated.

Newegg is a good place to get a new drive. You could buy a bigger HDD for less money than Sony replacing or repairing or existing HDD. You also won't have to wait as long to get your PS3 up and running. However, the question is, if you get a new HDD will it solve the problem? Do you have a 2.5" SATA drive to test it on?

Even a monkey can do it. Might as well spend $50 - $100 on a good HD than pay for Sony to do it and pay all the shipping costs.

Thanks for that link ship! I had went ahead and bought a new HD, but this kind of confirms what I thought. All im really losing is my saved games and downloaded stuff, no biggie really.

Hell the ps3 manual tells you how to do it lol




edit: can i do anything with the 60gb hd i take out? can it be sold or something or should i just go play some frisbee with it?

Yeah np. The firmware is installed on the machine itself. So yeah, just lost saves and what have you. Better than a stick in the eye.

It depends what's wrong with it. If the head crashed into the platter (physically), then it's toast. If it is a matter of bad sectors, there are many programs that can scan for and mark bad sectors so that they are not used in the future. You would have to run diagnostics on the drive to find out what's wrong.
