CPU question About upgrading.
Hey i have a p4 1.5 ghz 400mhz front side bus CPU. Can i get a another p4 with a higher front side bus? I know my motherboard wouldnt support the bus speed, but would it just use the speed at 400mhz?? Because i want like a 2.8 but they dont make them in 400mhz bus speed.

If your mobo won't support the higher FSB, it will run at the lower FBS frequency, but you are really then loosing out on the performance that the chip was designed to run at. It may even run worse than what you have I would guess.

WinXP Pro, Asus A7V8x MoBo, Athlon XP 2400+, 1GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, SB Live! 5.1, Klipsch 4.1 400Watt,
Logitech MX700 Cordless Mouse,
Logitech Freedom2.4 Cordless Joystick
I have p4 1.5 Ghz 512mb pc133 (Maxed out) 80 gig dr xp home edition p4 1.5 ghz sony viao computer. I dont see why more MHZ wouldnt run slower, that dont make no sence at all. No im not going to upgrade the motherboard either.

SS, you need a whole new computer, buddy.
PC133 ram on a P4? Moving to DDR will show a HUGE jump in performance. This is a very big bottle neck on your system. My suggestion: SCRAP IT. Sell the computer for the couple houndred bucks(tops) you would get for it and start over.
You are also on a Willy core P4, a really crappy core.
If you would somehow get a P4 2.8 to work in there, your P4 would not run at 2.8. The drop down is FSB will also bring down your proc's clock speed.
SS, sorry to break it to you, but you bought a bad compouter for upgrading. It is not as simple as upgrading your CPU for better performance. The only good computers for upgrading are ones you built yourself. I highly suggest you learn how, as it saves a lot of money.

Hey there, first post in these forums. Thought I might could help. The 2.8c that you are talking about w/800mhz FSB needs that FSB in order to work. That cpu has a multiplier of 14. So even if it did run in your system, it would only run at 1400 mhz. Just a thought but did you ever concider AMD. I am not a fanboy or anything but they do have some killer deals. I just got a 2500 barton, 512 DDR, and epox mobo the other day for under $300. That little rig keeps up with my 2.5 p4 no problem. Just a thought...

That is really a huge jump lazer, from 1.5 to 2.8 I would say its not even worth trying at all on the same motherboard.if you choose to keep all your other parts the solution would be new motherboard and new ram along with the CPU. Also you better make sure you have very ample cooling in that case of yours.

what video card do you have? if its an old video card, you would see a quick improvement in game performance by upgrading that. Other than that, your only choice is to buy a new mobo, cpu, and ram. you can get a p4 2.4 ghz 800mhz fsb for $150, a decent motherboard for under $100, and 512 mb of pc3200 ddr for like $80. those are all online prices.

Yep, you're pretty much limited by the type of system you already have, as others have said. Sony, HP, Dell, Compaq, Gateway and such make it real tough to upgrade and work on their machines purposely.
I would also suggest building your own machine. The only tool you need is a screwdriver... and a little know-how. Since you already have all the peripherals like monitor, kb, mouse, drives, USB coffeemaker, etc. it's a little cheaper to do...
Come on, I've seen your car, you can afford it
