Performance?
I'm just wondering if I've overlooked anything obvious or if there is something easy I can do for my PC. But I'm not really pleased with the performance. I have a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz with 1gig pc2100 DDR ram. I've tried overclocking, but my motherboard only supports pc2100 and lower, so I set the ratio to 1.5 and overclocked it back up to 266mhz, making the host clock 177, but then my computer just sits there and finally reloads at 2.4 ghz and I have to go in and enable host clock settings again. The system runs great overall, I just think I should be seeing better results in my gaming for what I have here. o also I'm running a Geforce 4 Ti4800SE graphics card on a 90mhz agp slot. Any suggestions would be great, I'm up for just chit chat about it if you don't know what exactly to tell me. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.

Its a 533, and it has a very clean 7200RPM harddrive thats defragmented regularly. Yeah a P4, and I'm pretty studied on my computer stuff too thats why I'm kinda messed up about it, I think I should see a bit better then I do. I think my framerates should be a bit better, and I've even messed with the settings on the video card, overclocking it doesn't do too much for me at all. maybe 200-300 points on the benchmark.

Have you made sure that there are no old drivers still on your system? those can mess up performance if they're not removed sometimes....
I have a very similiar system to you, except I have a Radeon 9700. All games run very very smooth.
IF, and only IF you can't sort it out, I suggest a reformat. I know I know, it sucks to do that, but back everything up and start fresh. PC's and, atleast in my experience, games, always run much faster on a new disk. I usually reformat about twice a year to keep things running well.
oh, and are you using a soundcard or onboard? I know that I had some issues with my onboard sound that made my games kind of jittery

well your ram is bottlenecking the rest of the system. I would say you really need pc 2700 at least. Also if you want better performance just turn down all of your graphics settings.
I have a p4 2.4b and 5900 fx, but I run Et in 800x600 with all the low graphics settings. I prefer the higher framerate over the pretty graphics and high resolutions. Thats just for multiplayer games though. Single player games i crank everything up.
edit: you also might want to try upgrading your motherboard's bios, and your ti4800's bios. Jut go to their respective manufacturers and see if they have any flash updates.

There was a few threads about this sort of thing a while back... it mentioned this one guy's site who specialized in tweaking the OS to turn off all of the extraneous services that are default turned on in the OS that aren't really necessary and hog resources... can't remember the name of the site... "Black" something or other was the guy's name, I think...
Agent-commando, you remember what I'm talking about? You were ivolved with the thread with some very helpful stuff...
But, figure out what processes are running in the background, and turn off the ones that you don't need... just be careful, as turning some off can make your system unstable...
